Constructed wetlands are increasingly used as a solution to treat polluted water in natural environments. Located in the Albufera de València Natural Park, a constructed wetland was built in 2009 as a pilot project to act as an intermediary between low-quality waters and the largest protected coastal lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula. With a unique dataset spanning more than a decade (2009-2023), this study assessed changes in plankton communities both spatially (comparing six sampling sites) and temporally (comparing four periods of years).

Our primary objective was to compare recovery patterns after coarse- and fine-grain disturbances, focusing on two aspects: i) trend analysis to reveal long-term changes of six community parameters, and ii) variation analyses to assess parameter changes over time. We conducted statistical analysis on long-term data series of macroinvertebrates obtained from quantitative samples collected at four sections with varying degrees of disturbance along the impacted stream sections.

Extreme climatic events are becoming more frequent and intense than in the past, leading to water-level fluctuations and affecting aquatic ecosystems. Semiarid regions are very susceptible to changing climate.

Field samples in the phase of mass developments of cyanobacteria were used for genetic and toxicological analyses. Microcystins and microcystin genes were detected in field samples of the lake for the first time.
