Objective: Huntington's disease (HD) is a rare neurodegenerative disease caused by the expansion of an N-terminal repeat in the huntingtin protein. The protein is expressed in all cells in the body; hence, peripheral tissues, such as blood, may recapitulate processes in the brain. The plasma metabolome may provide a window into active processes that influence brain health and a unique opportunity to noninvasively identify processes that may contribute to neurodegeneration.

Oral sodium phenylbutyrate (SPB) is currently under investigation as a histone deacetylation (HDAC) inhibitor in Huntington disease (HD). Ongoing studies indicate that symptoms related to HD genetic abnormalities decrease with SPB therapy. We measured the Young's modulus at temperatures ranging from 20 to 100 degrees C for a collagen fibril that is taken from a rat's tendon. The hydration change under heating and the damping decrement were measured as well. At physiological temperatures 25 to 45 degrees C, the Young's modulus decreases, which can be interpreted as an instability of the collagen.

Analysis of species diversity of the micro-fungi typically detected at the sites of biodamage of synthetic polymers on space vehicles exhibited the presence of a broad variety of opportunistic pathogens and toxic species. Thus, 78 species of micromycetes of 300 polymer destructing fungi are associated with biological risk levels BSL-1 and BSL-2 (low and moderate levels, respectively). In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 64 subjects with Huntington disease (HD), 8 g/day of creatine administered for 16 weeks was well tolerated and safe. Serum and brain creatine concentrations increased in the creatine-treated group and returned to baseline after washout. Serum 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OH2'dG) levels, an indicator of oxidative injury to DNA, were markedly elevated in HD and reduced by creatine treatment.
