Background: Structure and function in the mammalian kidney are organized along a radial axis highlighted by the corticomedullary organization and regional patterning of the collecting system. The arborised collecting epithelium arises through controlled growth, branching and commitment of Wnt11+ ureteric progenitor cells within cortically localized branch tips until postnatal day 3.

Methods: We applied in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence to key markers of collecting duct cell types to examine their distribution in the embryonic and postnatal mouse kidneys.

The study of environmental niches, in particular, aquatic ecosystems in terms of genome analysis of inhabiting antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) microorganisms as reservoirs of acquired resistance determinants (AMR genes), represents a specific concern from a One Health approach. Urban areas are characterized by a constant anthropogenic input, which is manifested in the chemical composition of the surface layer of urban soil. The consequence is the formation of intense anomalies of chemical elements, including lead (Pb), that are atypical for this landscape. Due to several factors, such as environmental and climate changes, the risk of health threats originating at the human-animal-environment interface, including vector-borne diseases (VBDs) and zoonoses, is increasing. Low-resource settings struggle to counter these multidimensional risks due to their already-strained health systems and are therefore disproportionally affected by the impact caused by these changes. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the conversion of biomass into renewable chemicals, yet the range of value-added products that can be formed from biomass remains relatively small. We investigated the properties of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) being in an external static magnetic field directed along the helix axis. We considered a dichroic CLC, that is, CLC with parameters ReΔ=Reɛ_{1}-Reɛ_{2}/2=0 and ImΔ=Imɛ_{1}-Imɛ_{2}/2≠0, where ɛ_{1,2} are the principal values of the local dielectric permittivity tensor. We have shown that in the case of the wavelength dependence of the magneto-optic activity parameter, new features appear in the optics of dichroic CLCs, in particular, in this case new Dirac points appear.

We investigated the specific properties of magnetically induced transparency (MIT) and magnetically induced absorption (MIA) in helically structured periodic crystals (HSPCs). We showed that for the wavelength of MIT we have an ideal optical diode: The forward signal passes fully, while the backward signal is completely absorbed and not reflected. A formula for the wavelength λ_{t} of MIT and MIA resonance based on the numerical simulations was analytically obtained.

Mammalian cells respond to insufficient oxygen through transcriptional regulators called hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs). Although transiently protective, prolonged HIF activity drives distinct pathological responses in different tissues. Using a model of chronic HIF1a accumulation in pluripotent-stem-cell-derived oligodendrocyte progenitors (OPCs), we demonstrate that HIF1a activates non-canonical targets to impair generation of oligodendrocytes from OPCs.

Mutations in PLP1, the gene that encodes proteolipid protein (PLP), result in failure of myelination and neurological dysfunction in the X-chromosome-linked leukodystrophy Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD). Most PLP1 mutations, including point mutations and supernumerary copy variants, lead to severe and fatal disease. Patients who lack PLP1 expression, and Plp1-null mice, can display comparatively mild phenotypes, suggesting that PLP1 suppression might provide a general therapeutic strategy for PMD.

Oxidation-reduction chemistry is fundamental to the metabolism of all living organisms, and hence quantifying the principal redox players is important for a comprehensive understanding of cell metabolism in normal and pathological states. In mammalian cells, this is accomplished by measuring oxygen partial pressure (pO) in parallel with free and enzyme-bound reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (phosphate) [H] (NAD(P)H) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD, a proxy for NAD). Previous optical methods for these measurements had accompanying problems of cytotoxicity, slow speed, population averaging, and inability to measure all redox parameters simultaneously.
