Here, we performed large-scale Ca imaging in hippocampal CA1 and CA3 of freely behaving mice that repeatedly explored the same, initially novel environments over weeks.

Intrapartum deceleration and acceleration areas are associated with neonatal encephalopathy.

Objective: To investigate whether an association exists between deceleration and acceleration areas on continuous fetal cardiotocography (CTG) and neonatal encephalopathy (NE).

Methods: A single center, retrospective case-control study was conducted to compare CTG characteristics of low-risk pregnancies (35 weeks of gestation or more), complicated by moderate to severe NE with two matched controls for every case. Controls were matched by gestational age and cord blood pH.

We previously reported that touching a social robot can also induce a reduction in pain ratings. However, it is unclear if the effect that touching a robot has on pain perception is due to its appearance and its pleasant touch, or due to its ability to socially interact with humans.

Consistent population activity on the scale of minutes in the mouse hippocampus.

Neurons in the hippocampus fire in consistent sequence over the timescale of seconds during the delay period of some memory experiments. For longer timescales, the firing of hippocampal neurons also changes slowly over minutes within experimental sessions. It was thought that these slow dynamics are caused by stochastic drift or a continuous change in the representation of the episode, rather than consistent sequences unfolding over minutes.

Dysregulated homeostasis of neural activity has been hypothesized to drive Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. AD begins with a decades-long presymptomatic phase, but whether homeostatic mechanisms already begin failing during this silent phase is unknown. We show that before the onset of memory decline and sleep disturbances, familial AD (fAD) model mice display no deficits in CA1 mean firing rate (MFR) during active wakefulness.

Stacked Ensemble Machine Learning for Range-Separation Parameters.

Density functional theory-based high-throughput materials and drug discovery has achieved tremendous success in recent decades, but its power on organic semiconducting molecules suffered catastrophically from the self-interaction error until the nonempirical but expensive optimally tuned range-separated hybrid (OT-RSH) functionals were developed. An OT-RSH transitions from a short-range (semi)local functional to a long-range Hartree-Fock exchange at a distance characterized by a molecule-specific range-separation parameter (ω). Herein, we propose a stacked ensemble machine learning model that provides an accelerated alternative of OT-RSH based on system-dependent structural and electronic configurations.

Multidisciplinary intensive outpatient rehabilitation program for patients with moderate-to-advanced Parkinson's disease.

Human-human social touch improves mood and alleviates pain. No studies have so far tested the effect of human-robot emotional touch on experimentally induced pain ratings, on mood and on oxytocin levels in healthy young adults. Here, we assessed the effect of touching the robot PARO on pain perception, on mood and on salivary oxytocin levels, in 83 young adults.

Multiple Maps of the Same Spatial Context Can Stably Coexist in the Mouse Hippocampus.

Hippocampal place cells selectively fire when an animal traverses a particular location and are considered a neural substrate of spatial memory. Place cells were shown to change their activity patterns (remap) across different spatial contexts but to maintain their spatial tuning in a fixed familiar context. Here, we show that mouse hippocampal neurons can globally remap, forming multiple distinct representations (maps) of the same familiar environment, without any apparent changes in sensory input or behavior.

Revealing neural correlates of behavior without behavioral measurements.

Measuring neuronal tuning curves has been instrumental for many discoveries in neuroscience but requires a priori assumptions regarding the identity of the encoded variables. We applied unsupervised learning to large-scale neuronal recordings in behaving mice from circuits involved in spatial cognition and uncovered a highly-organized internal structure of ensemble activity patterns. This emergent structure allowed defining for each neuron an 'internal tuning-curve' that characterizes its activity relative to the network activity, rather than relative to any predefined external variable, revealing place-tuning and head-direction tuning without relying on measurements of place or head-direction.

A Heterogeneous Kinetics Model for Triplet Exciton Transfer in Solid-State Upconversion.

High internal quantum efficiency semiconductor nanocrystal (NC)-based photon upconversion devices are currently based on a single monolayer of active NCs. Devices are therefore limited in their external quantum efficiency based on the low number of photons absorbed. Increasing the number of photons absorbed is expected to increase the upconversion efficiency, yet experimentally increasing the number of layers does not appreciably increase the upconverted light output.

The association between obesity and secular trend of stature: a nationwide study of 2.8 million adolescents over five decades.

A novel web based decision-matrix software was designed to trace experimentally the process of decision making in medical situations. The scenarios included a crisis and non-crisis simulation for endometrial cancer surgery.

The type of sport matters: Pain perception of endurance athletes versus strength athletes.

Background: Studies assessing athletes' pain sensitivity yield inconsistent data, which demonstrate either increased pain threshold and tolerance in athletes than controls or similar thresholds. This inconsistency may result from the variability in the type of sport practiced by the athletes and its effect on pain perception. For example, endurance athletes perform continuous intense exercise for prolonged durations, whereas strength athletes perform short bouts of extreme efforts.
