Listening to the community: identifying obesity prevention strategies for rural preschool-aged children.

Multi-level interventions promoting healthy weight in rural preschool children aged 2-5 years are limited. With the goal of developing a community-informed obesity prevention intervention for rural preschool-aged children, the purpose of this descriptive study was to identify: (1) community settings and intervention strategies to prioritize for an intervention; (2) potential implementation challenges and solutions; and (3) immediate interventions the study team and community partners could collaboratively implement. Workshops occurred in two rural communities in Indiana (2 workshops) and North Carolina (2 workshops), with high obesity rates.

Event portfolio management: An emerging transdisciplinary field of theory and praxis.

The phenomenon of event portfolio has gradually received acceptance and recognition as host destinations are steadily moving towards assembling multiple events across the calendar to serve multiple policy purposes. This paper reviews all the pertinent literature providing a common ground for studying event portfolios and their management exigencies. It traces the origins of the event portfolio concept and outlines its evolution to date.

Notch signaling in postnatal pituitary expansion: proliferation, progenitors, and cell specification.

Mutations in PROP1 account for up to half of the cases of combined pituitary hormone deficiency that result from known causes. Despite this, few signaling molecules and pathways that influence PROP1 expression have been identified. Notch signaling has been linked to Prop1 expression, but the developmental periods during which Notch signaling influences Prop1 and overall pituitary development remain unclear.

Visual cues given by humans are not sufficient for Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) to find hidden food.

Recent research suggests that domesticated species--due to artificial selection by humans for specific, preferred behavioral traits--are better than wild animals at responding to visual cues given by humans about the location of hidden food. \Although this seems to be supported by studies on a range of domesticated (including dogs, goats and horses) and wild (including wolves and chimpanzees) animals, there is also evidence that exposure to humans positively influences the ability of both wild and domesticated animals to follow these same cues. Here, we test the performance of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) on an object choice task that provides them with visual-only cues given by humans about the location of hidden food.

Vrx: a verify-record system for radiotherapy.

A system of computer programs has been created to allow the entry of radiotherapy treatment details as defined by the physician, the verification of the machine parameters at every treatment, and the recording of the entire course of treatment. Various utility programs are available to simplify the use and maintenance of the system. The majority of the code is written in FORTRAN-77, the remainder in MACRO-11.

Manganese as a calcium probe: electron paramagnetic resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of intact cells.

When Lettree cells are exposed to Mn2+, the cation becomes associated with cells in two ways: in a relatively loose and mobile manner that gives a six-line EPR spectrum designated Mnb*, and in an immobile, relatively tight manner that gives no detectable EPR specrtum, designated Mnb. Mnb* is probably on the surface of cells; most Mnb is probably inside cells. NMR measurements of Lettree cell suspensions show two water proton relaxation rates and confirm the existence of cell-associated Mn.

Vision and sports.

The relationship between optimal visual skills and optimal athletic performance is discussed along with specific examples of how performance can be affected in tennis, basketball, football, baseball, and golf. A step-by-step method is presented to evaluate these specific skills during the optometric evaluation.
