Streptococcus pyogenes remains one of the top ten causes of mortality from infectious diseases. Children in low-income nations have high carrier rates of Streptococcus pyogenes, which can serve as a source of infections, including simple superficial infections that may lead to invasive and post-streptococcal diseases, particularly among schoolchildren. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of Streptococcus pyogenes, associated factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles among urban and rural public schoolchildren in Gondar City, Northwest Ethiopia.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a worldwide challenge to the well-being of animals and humans. The emergence of AMR is largely attributed to the improper utilization and overuse of antimicrobials. In order to combat this issue and promote responsible antimicrobial use (AMU), it is imperative for veterinary professionals and graduating students to possess extensive knowledge, maintain positive attitudes, and adhere to good practices regarding AMU and AMR.

Background: Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (UT2DM) and its associated consequences nowadays have been a global health crisis, especially for adults. Iron has the property to oxidize and reduce reversibly, which is necessary for metabolic processes and excess accumulation of iron indicated by serum ferritin levels could have a significant impact on the pathophysiology of T2DM via generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, no conclusive evidence existed about the association of serum ferritin with the state of glycemic control status.

Globally, the deterioration of drinking water quality is a major public health problem that contributes to the spread of disease and causes death. Therefore, it is important to have regular quality control monitoring. This study aimed to assess the level of physicochemical and bacteriological quality of household drinking water and its contributing factors in flood-prone settlements of South Gondar Zone, Ethiopia.

Milk is a complete and highly nutritious source of food for human beings. However, in many developing countries, including Ethiopia, the quality of milk products has become a major health concern for consumers, particularly for infants and children. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the quality of raw and pasteurized milk marketed in Gondar city, Northwest Ethiopia.

This study aims to explore the effects of voluntary family planning (FP) utilization on food security in selected districts of Ethiopia. Quantitative research methods were used to conduct a community-based study among a sample of 737 women of reproductive age. The data were analyzed using a hierarchical logistic regression constructed in three models.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) imposes a substantial burden on pediatric hospital capacity in Europe. Promising prophylactic interventions against RSV including monoclonal antibodies (mAb) and maternal immunizations (MI) are close to licensure. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of potential mAb and MI interventions against RSV in infants, for six European countries.

Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a public health problem worldwide. Hepatitis B virus infection (HBV), hepatitis C virus infection (HCV), and syphilis are among the STIs. Female sex workers (FSWs) continue to be a high-risk group for STIs due to a variety of factors, including exposure to unsafe sexual practices.

Article Synopsis
  • Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a major cause of infectious diarrhea in hospitalized patients, exacerbated by antibiotic use and the rise of hypervirulent strains that are hard to treat.
  • * A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of C. difficile in hospitalized patients, utilizing multiple bibliographic databases and following PRISMA guidelines.
  • * In total, 15 studies were analyzed, revealing a 30% weighted pooled prevalence of C. difficile, with notable resistance rates to antibiotics like vancomycin and metronidazole, highlighting significant variability among the studies.

Background: While rapid diagnostic tests are an alternative diagnostic tests for microscopy in the diagnosis of malaria in rural settings, their performance has been inconsistent. Performance of rapid diagnostic tests might be affected by manufacturing process, transportation and storage, parasitemia level, and skill of personnel who perform the tests. Therefore, periodic evaluation of the local field performance of rapid diagnostic tests is mandatory in order to make early corrections in case of decreased performance.

  • A study in Bahir Dar Zuria district, Ethiopia, assessed malaria prevalence and community knowledge about the disease among 149 febrile patients from January to March 2020.* -
  • Results showed that 14.8% of participants tested positive for malaria, with varying prevalence rates for different species and indicators of community knowledge, attitude, and practice.* -
  • Significant relationships were found between knowledge and factors like age, education, and family size, with those from smaller families more likely to have negative attitudes toward malaria.*

Background: An ear infection is responsible for up to 40% of preventable hearing impairment; one of the reasons for frequent and unwise antibiotic usage, especially in the developing world. Since the incidence of antibiotic resistance is increasing, especially in resource-limited countries, up-to-date knowledge on the susceptibility of ear-discharge isolates to antibiotic is important for better patient treatment. Therefore, this study aimed at determining the bacterial etiologies and their antibiotic susceptibility profiles among patients suspected with ear infections.

Background: Although () and () cause acute diarrheal diseases in people all over the world, they are most commonly seen in other mammalian species and are a seemingly healthy carrier condition. Humans in Ethiopia, on the other hand, are largely unaware of the existence of in food animals as potential sources of infection.

Objective: To determine the occurrence, risk factors, and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of thermophilic species in bovine raw meat from the abattoir and butcher shops.

Background: In most cases, people pay more attention to the microbial quality of drinking water than the quality of water they used to wash hands. This may lead to the occurrence of various foodborne illnesses through the introduction of pathogenic microbes during preparation and serving of food.

Objective: To determine the effect of microbial quality of washing water on the hand hygiene status of food handlers in Jimma town.

Raw milk may contain pathogenic microorganism that can seriously affect the health of consumers. In Southwest Ethiopia, raw cow milk is consumed more than the processed products, but its microbiological quality and its predictors are not studied well. The aim of this study was to determine the microbial quality of raw cow milk and its predictors along the dairy value chain in Southwest Ethiopia.

In this study, we investigated the concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn; and their associated health risks through consumption of ginger. After the ginger samples digested with a mixture of HNO and HClO at 200 °C for 2:00 h, the amount of metals were investigated by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Efficiency of the analytical measurement was validated on spiking the sample with standard solutions of metals and the recovery for all studied metals were ranged from 91.

Background: The introduction of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and MRI-guided biopsy has improved the diagnosis of prostate cancer. However, it remains uncertain whether it is cost-effective, especially in a population-based screening strategy.

Methods: We used a micro-simulation model to assess the cost-effectiveness of an MRI-based prostate cancer screening in comparison to the classical prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, at a population level.

The benefit of prostate cancer screening is counterbalanced by the risk of overdiagnosis and overtreatment. The use of a multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) test after a positive prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test followed by magnetic resonance imaging-guided biopsy (MRIGB) may reduce these harms. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of mpMRI and MRIGB vs the regular screening pathway in a population-based prostate cancer screening setting.
