Any exertion, whether it be leisure, sports or professional activities, has become the most accurate means of evaluating the effect of indoor or outdoor air pollution on the respiratory tract, particularly in atopic patients.

Power of isoniazid acetylation and pigmentation; first experimental tests in the rabbit: comparison with clinical data.

A positive correlation has been observed clinically at the Centre Edouard Rist, Paris, between the degree of pigmentation and the power of isoniazid acetylation in so-called "caucasians". The investigation was based on a relatively small sample of 153 observations, but sufficient to allow a significant statistical analysis. Comparing the results with data published in the literature, it may be assumed that this relationship between the power of acetylation and pigmentation would be applicable to all human beings.

A comparison of flunisolide inhaler and beclomethasone dipropionate inhaler in bronchial asthma.

Ninety-nine patients, who had never previously taken inhaled steroids were enrolled in a randomized, single-blind, parallel study, the aim of which was to compare the efficacy and safety of flunisolide inhalation, 500 mcg twice daily, with beclomethasone dipropionate inhaler 100 mcg four times daily for the treatment of chronic asthma. The treatment period was for 6 weeks. The patients were examined clinically at entry, week 3 and week 6 and both treatment groups showed a marked improvement in almost all parameters during the course of the study.

Abnormal color vision and reliable self-monitoring of blood glucose.

Color vision was assessed in 103 insulin-dependent diabetic patients using the Farnsworth-Münsell 100-Hue Test. All showed color vision impairment. Thirty-four had true dyschromatopsia while 22 suffered from tritanopia or other axial defects.

Phase II study of Lonidamine in cancer patients.

12 patients with metastatic cancer were treated with the substituted indazole carboxylic acid Lonidamine at oral daily doses of 270 mg/m2. Toxicity, consisting mainly of myalgias, somnolence, hyperesthesia, anorexia and vomiting, generally decreased or disappeared over time despite continuing drug administration at unmodified dosage. Myalgias and hyperesthesias were markedly relieved with prednisone 5 mg twice daily.

Phase I toxicologic study of Lonidamine in cancer patients.

15 patients with metastatic cancer were treated with Lonidamine, a substituted indazole carboxylic acid active against the Lewis lung and Sarcoma 180 tumors. Single doses of 600 mg (350-400 mg/m2) mostly induced somnolence and gastro-intestinal side effects. Toxicity occurring during chronic administration of Lonidamine at doses ranging between 45 and 275 mg/m2 twice daily, mainly consisted of somnolence, myalgias, hyperesthesia and mild hair loss.

Circadian changes in effectiveness of corticosteroids in eight patients with allergic asthma.

A double-blind, crossover, randomized, placebo-controlled chronotherapeutic study was designed in which eight patients (two men, 20 and 48 yr old, and six women, 22 to 58 yr old) suffering from corticosteroid-dependent allergic asthma were socially synchronized, with a diurnal activity from about 7:30 A.M. to about 11 P.

A procedure for determining angular positional data relative to the principal axes of the human body.

This paper describes a simple computational procedure for determining angular displacement-time histories of human motion from three-dimensional cine data. The method is based on algebraic transformations of coordinates and coordinate axes. Through these coordinate transformations data was acquired for a multi-axial tumbling skill to illustrate angular displacement-time data relative to the moving coordinate system described by the human body through space.

The author reviews recent ideas on allergic occupational respiratory disorders which clearly define the severity and the possibility of a cure, thanks to early diagnosis. The diversity of specific and non-specific causes of occupational asthma and the need for research into new causes of pulmonary granulomas are emphasized. The basis for industrial compensation and medico-social prevention are recalled.

[Anti-glafenine circulating antibodies: demonstration and frequency in acute renal insufficiency following intake of glafenine in toxic doses].

From 1970 to 1981, acute glafenineeeeeeee poisoning was observed in 106 patients, including 37 with acute renal insufficiency (ARI). From 1977 to 1982, the search for anti-glafenin antibodies was carried out systematically by direct and indirect tests for antiglobulin on erythrocytes, and by leucoagglutination and complement fixation tests on platelets in the presence of glafenin. An antibody was detected in only one of the 17 ARI patients studied.

[Human allergic hypersensitivity and chemical residues in food].

Chemical and immunological basis of hypersensitivity reactions to low molecular weight substances are recalled. Then the authors give examples of directly reactive chemicals as penicillins and some antineoplastic drugs. The possible role of reactive impurities as penicillins and aspirin is also reminded.

Clinical, immunological, and functional investigations were conducted to study possible specific factors involved in the etiology of asthma in adults. The authors emphasize the frequency of positive skin, radio-immunologic and bronchial provocation tests for domestic pneumallergens in patients with common asthma, even those over 40 years of age. These cases improve in a protected environment and may benefit from immunotherapy.

In world industry and agriculture as a whole, the number of people with asthma and complex pneumopathies related to chemical and organic pollution seems important. Indeed, subjects with an atopic inclination are often the first to be jeoparized. However, it must be stressed that occurrence of asthma in relation with work should always lead to investigate an anomaly in professional hygiene.
