Background: The Carpentier-Edwards Perimount Magna Ease prosthesis (PME) represents the latest generation of stented bioprostheses used for surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). The aim of our study was to evaluate the long-term clinical outcome and hemodynamic performance of the prosthesis with a focus on the incidence and course of structural valve deterioration (SVD) by serial echocardiographic examinations.

Methods: SAVR with the PME was performed in 58 consecutive patients between 2007 and 2008.

Background: Mitral valve (MV) repair in children is challenging because of the broad spectrum of lesions and anticipated patient growth. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the outcome of MV repair in children below 10 years of age.

Methods: We reviewed all MV repair procedures performed in children below 10 years of age.

Purpose: Different sedation regimens have been described for use during transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation (tf-TAVI) for treatment in patients with severe aortic stenosis. The purpose of this study was to compare dexmedetomidine (DEX) with a combination of propofol-opioid (PO) with respect to periprocedural gas exchange and hemodynamic support.

Methods: Data from a cohort of patients sedated with either DEX or PO for tf-TAVI were retrospectively analyzed from a prospectively maintained TAVI registry.

Article Synopsis
  • The St Jude Medical Trifecta valve is a new type of heart valve for replacing the aortic valve, aimed at improving surgical outcomes for patients with severe valve issues.
  • A study involving 837 patients who received the valve showed effective performance, with low pressure gradients, indicating good blood flow, and a high percentage experiencing no patient-prosthesis mismatch.
  • While the short-term results are promising with no significant complications reported, further long-term studies comparing it to other valves are necessary to evaluate its effectiveness over time.

Background And Aim Of The Study: Bacterial colonization of inert artificial materials is a critical variable in the appearance of foreign body-centered infections. Hence, a new experimental endocarditis model was evaluated that enables quantitative in-vivo testing of bacterial adherence to prosthetic materials.

Methods: In 53 rabbits, different patches of either Dacron (DAC; n = 16), glutaraldehyde-fixed pericardium (GAP; n = 18) or cryopreserved allograft (AG; n = 19) were threaded onto a Prolene suture and led through a stitch incision at the left atrium to the ventricle, perforating the mitral valve and leaving the heart at the outside of the left ventricle.
