Background: A significant proportion of children and adolescents experience back pain. However, a comprehensive systematic review on the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions is lacking.

Objectives: To evaluate benefits and harms of rehabilitation interventions for non-specific low back pain (LBP) or thoracic spine pain in the pediatric population.

Effectiveness of postsurgical rehabilitation following lumbar disc herniation surgery: A systematic review.

Introduction: The effectiveness of post-surgical rehabilitation following lumbar disc herniation (LDH) surgery is unclear.

Research Question: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of rehabilitation interventions initiated within three months post-surgery for adults treated surgically for LDH.

Material And Methods: This systematic review searched seven databases from inception to November 2023.

Spreading rates of bacterial colonies depend on substrate stiffness and permeability.

The ability of bacteria to colonize and grow on different surfaces is an essential process for biofilm development. Here, we report the use of synthetic hydrogels with tunable stiffness and porosity to assess physical effects of the substrate on biofilm development. Using time-lapse microscopy to track the growth of expanding colonies, we find that biofilm colony growth can increase with increasing substrate stiffness, unlike what is found on traditional agar substrates.

Characteristics of adolescent athletes seeking early versus late care for sport-related concussion.

Objectives: 1) To determine which characteristics of adolescent athletes with SRC are associated with 'early' versus 'late' presentation for multimodal treatment; 2) to build a propensity score to investigate the effects of treatment timing during the management of SRCs.

Methods: Associations between early (0-7 days) versus late (8-28 days) presentation for treatment and pre-specified sociodemographic, pre-injury and injury characteristics were investigated in a historical cohort study of 2949 multi-sport athletes across Canada aged 12-18 years diagnosed with a SRC in community-based healthcare clinics.

Results: Early presentation was associated with being male, completing a pre-injury baseline assessment, and responding 'yes' or 'no' to having a diagnosed learning disability.

The SALT-Readout ASIC for Silicon Strip Sensors of Upstream Tracker in the Upgraded LHCb Experiment.

SALT, a new dedicated readout Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) for the Upstream Tracker, a new silicon detector in the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment, has been designed and developed. It is a 128-channel chip using an innovative architecture comprising a low-power analogue front-end with fast pulse shaping and a 40 MSps 6-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) in each channel, followed by a Digital Signal Processing (DSP) block performing pedestal and Mean Common Mode (MCM) subtraction and zero suppression. The prototypes of SALT were fabricated and tested, confirming the full chip functionality and fulfilling the specifications.

The primary receptor for SARS-CoV-2 is the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), yet new studies reveal the importance of additional extracellular co-receptors that mediate binding and host cell invasion by SARS-CoV-2. Vimentin is an intermediate filament protein that is increasingly recognized as being present on the extracellular surface of a subset of cell types, where it can bind to and facilitate pathogens' cellular uptake.

Case Report: Stepwise Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Effects Following Convalescent Plasma Therapy With Full Clinical Recovery.

In these times of COVID-19 pandemic, concern has been raised about the potential effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on immunocompromised patients, particularly on those receiving B-cell depleting agents and having therefore a severely depressed humoral response. Convalescent plasma can be a therapeutic option for these patients. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of convalescent plasma is crucial to optimize such therapeutic approach.

Multi-modal management of sport and non-sport related concussion by chiropractic sports specialists: a case series.

This case series describes the multi-modal treatment plans delivered by two chiropractic sports specialists for the management of post-concussive symptoms (PCS). Three concussion cases are presented each with different mechanisms of injury (two sportrelated and one non-sport-related) and each within a different stage of recovery (acute, sub-acute, and chronic). Treatment plans included patient education, sub-symptom threshold exercise, soft-tissue therapy, spinal manipulation, and cervical spine as well as visual/vestibular rehabilitation exercises.

Several studies published in 2020 showed new data supporting the prescription of statins in some old and very old patients. Despite the enthusiasm about SGLT-2 inhibitors, caution must remain in frail and dependent older diabetic patients who are not well represented in most studies. Antihypertensive treatment appears more beneficial when taken at night rather than in the morning but beware of the prescribing cascade of a diuretic when a new prescription of a calcium channel blocker.

Formation and Characterization of Polyphenol-Derived Red Chromophores. Enhancing the Color of Processed Cocoa Powders: Part 2.

Very recently, we described the formation of (+)-catechin- and (-)-epicatechin-derived polar chromophores by means of a cocoa alkalization process. In this study we focus on the generation of unpolar chromophores using model reactions via Dutching with softer alkaline conditions. UPLC-HR-ESI-TOF-MS analysis and one-dimensional and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy led to the unequivocal identification of dehydrodicatechin- and hydroxyxanthene-derived chromophores.

Although cocoa powder alkalization (Dutching) is a widely used industrial process to improve taste, dispersibility, and coloring of the final product, nevertheless knowledge about the compounds causing a change in coloring is fragmentary. By means of alkaline model reactions starting from the major cocoa polyphenol monomers, (+)-catechin or (-)-epicatechin, eight chromophores were derived from the first rearrangement product catechinic acid. LC-MS/MS analysis, one- and two dimensional-NMR, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy led to the unequivocal identification of 6'-hydroxycatechinic acids (1a, 2a) and their radical states (1b, 2b), which were highlighted as main red chromophores.

Effects of local vibration therapy on various performance parameters: a narrative literature review.

Introduction: The therapeutic effects of local muscle vibration (LMV) remain controversial due to a lack of specific protocols. This review was conducted to better understand the effects of various LMV application protocols.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed based on title and abstract and a set of predetermined inclusion criteria.

Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 associated with Behçet's disease.

Background: Little information is available regarding the association between vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 (VIN3) and Behçet's disease (BD). We report here concomitant VIN3 and genital ulcers in a patient with BD.

Case: A 44-year-old Caucasian woman with a history of BD, which had been evolving for 6 years, presented with ulcerated and papillomatous lesions on the vulva.

New highly in vitro antioxidative 3,8″-linked Biflav(an)ones and Flavanone-C-glycosides from Garcinia buchananii stem bark.

Very recently, we described highly antioxidative polyphenols isolated from the stem bark extract of the Garcinia buchananii tree. In this study, we describe additional antioxidants from Garcinia buchananii bark extract using hydrogen peroxide scavenging, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assays. UPLC-HR-ESI-TOF-MS(e) analysis, 1- and 2D-NMR, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy led to the unequivocal identification of the antioxidative molecules as a series of five 3,8″-linked biflav(an)ones and two flavanone-C-glycosides.

Burrowing behaviour of robotic bivalves with synthetic morphologies.

Several bivalve species burrow into sandy sediments to reach their living position. There are many hypotheses concerning the functional morphology of the bivalve shell for burrowing. Observational studies are limited and often qualitative and should be complemented by a synthetic approach mimicking the burrowing process using a robotic emulation.

Paroxetine hydrochloride.

Paroxetine hydrochloride (3S-trans)-3-[(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yloxy)methyl]-4-(4-fluorophenyl)-piperidine hydrochloride (or (-)-(3S,4R)-(4-(p-fluorophenyl)-3-[[3,4-(methylenedioxy)-phenoxy]methyl]piperidine hydrochloride), a phenylpiperidine derivative, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Paroxetine is indicated for the treatment of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder. The physicochemical properties, spectroscopic data (1D and 2D NMR, UV, FT-IR, MS, PXRD), stability, methods of preparation and chromatographic methods of analysis of pharmaceutical, and biological samples of paroxetine are documented in this review.

Bone loss after total hip arthroplasty.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate periprosthetic bone loss and to compare it with the bone loss in other areas of the body. We also aim to shed light on the course of bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with cemented femoral prosthesis in comparison with those with uncemented ones. We analyzed the BMD using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in a consecutively recruited convenience sample of 50 patients with cemented and uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA).

Coincidence of Behçet's disease and SAPHO syndrome.

A young woman presented with deteriorated visual acuity due to acute retinal vasculitis. The diagnosis of Behçet's disease was made on the basis of the ophthalmologic findings and recurrent oral and genital aphthous ulcerations. In the past, this young woman had been operated on several times because of progressive aseptic osteitis of the right clavicle.

[Physiotherapy in lumbar disc herniation ].

Physiotherapy is the treatment of choice in patients with symptoms caused by a lumbar disc herniation. In clinical practice a broad range of physiotherapeutic modalities has been revealed to be helpful. During the acute stage the efficacy of the McKenzie-concept, mobilisation therapies and traction has been demonstrated in randomized controlled trials with a blind assessor.

Community-acquired pneumonia. A prospective outpatient study.

We initiated a prospective study with a group of practitioners to assess the etiology, clinical presentation, and outcome of community-acquired pneumonia in patients diagnosed in the outpatient setting. All patients with signs and symptoms suggestive of pneumonia and an infiltrate on chest X-ray underwent an extensive standard workup and were followed over 4 weeks. Over a 4-year period, 184 patients were eligible, of whom 170 (age range, 15-96 yr; median, 43 yr) were included and analyzed.
