Technetium metal is renowned for its inertness in environmental conditions, rendering it an optimal candidate for use as a container material for high-level radioactive waste. Alternatively, thin technetium electroplated coatings can be employed to prevent corrosion of steel containers and the subsequent biofouling that may result. The utilization of metallic technetium in the design of containers for radioactive waste in deep burial may be promising from two perspectives: firstly, in terms of increasing their stability, and secondly, in terms of the utilization of technetium, which is a macrocomponent of radioactive waste.

Technetium-carbon nanophases are obtained by thermal decomposition of pertechnetates with large organic cations under an argon atmosphere. Parallel carbonization of organic cations (hexamethyleneiminium and triphenylguanidinium), which occurs during the thermal decomposition of their pertechnetates, leads to the formation of X-ray amorphous solid products. An X-ray absorption fine structure study revealed that they have a crystal structure containing technetium-carbon bonds with a length of 1.

To support decision-making in the primary care medical home, this clinical report links preterm birth and perinatal complications to early childhood developmental disability risks. It consolidates extensive contemporary outcome research from 2005 onward into an easy-to-use framework and stratifies prematurity and NICU experiences by degree of risk for developmental impairments. This framework informs and prioritizes point-of-care screening and surveillance strategies for pediatricians caring for children born preterm, guides additional assessment and referral for appropriate therapies, and offers opportunities for reassurance (when applicable) in office settings.

Background: Infants born extremely preterm (<28 weeks' gestation) are at high risk of neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) with 50% of survivors showing moderate or severe NDI when at 2 years of age. We sought to develop novel models by which to predict neurodevelopmental outcomes, hypothesizing that combining baseline characteristics at birth with medical care and environmental exposures would produce the most accurate model.

Methods: Using a prospective database of 692 infants from the Preterm Epo Neuroprotection (PENUT) Trial, which was carried out between December 2013 and September 2016, we developed three predictive algorithms of increasing complexity using a Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART) machine learning approach to predict both NDI and continuous Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development 3rd ed subscales at 2 year follow-up using: 1) the 5 variables used in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Extremely Preterm Birth Outcomes Tool, 2) 21 variables associated with outcomes in extremely preterm (EP) infants, and 3) a hypothesis-free approach using 133 potential variables available for infants in the PENUT database.

This paper presents synthetic methods for the preparation of Tc(III) and Tc(IV) coordination compounds with thiourea. We have shown that the main product of the synthesis is the complex [TcTuX]X, (Tu = (NH)CS, X = Cl, Br) and not [TcTu]Cl·4HO, as previously thought. Tu[TcX]X·3HO is the main technetium-containing byproduct of the reaction.

Neonatal Anemia.

Curr Pediatr Rev

February 2023

All neonates experience a downtrend in their hematocrit values immediately following the birth through normal falls in erythropoietin (Epo) production, transition to adult hemoglobin, and hemodilution with somatic growth. However, this drop is more pronounced in critically ill and preterm neonates and can lead to potentially pathologic anemia that impairs tissue oxygen delivery. In this review, we highlight the mechanisms underlying physiologic anemia and anemia of prematurity and briefly review the evidence for the treatment of anemia in the neonatal population, including the use of red blood cell transfusions, erythropoietic stimulating agents, and iron supplementation.

Objective: To determine whether an intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) prevention bundle featuring midline-elevated positioning reduced IVH among high-risk infants.

Study Design: In a retrospective study design, we compared outcomes of infants <1250 grams birth weight or <30 weeks gestation before (N = 205) and after (N = 360) implementation of an IVH prevention bundle, using Bayesian and frequentist logistic regression to determine whether the intervention decreased any grade IVH.

Results: In both the Bayesian and frequentist analyses, there was no difference in odds of any grade IVH before and after the implementation of the prevention bundle (OR 0.

In this work, we have proposed two new methods for the synthesis of [TcOL] (where L = imidazole (Im), methylimidazole (MeIm)) complexes using thiourea (Tu) and Sn(II) as the reducing agents. The main and by-products of the reactions were determined, and possible reaction mechanisms were proposed. We have shown that the reduction of Tc(VII) with thiourea is accompanied by the formation of the Tc(III) intermediate and further oxidation to Tc(V).

Background: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) occurs in 1-4:1000 live births. Although neonates with moderate-severe HIE have been studied over several decades, newborns with mild HIE remain understudied, including seizure occurrence, electroencephalography (EEG) characteristics, and outcome.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of neonates ≥35 weeks of gestation with mild HIE who underwent therapeutic hypothermia to correlate the early EEG background pattern with clinical course and outcomes.

Iron is critical for brain development, playing key roles in synaptogenesis, myelination, energy metabolism and neurotransmitter production. NICU infants are at particular risk for iron deficiency due to high iron needs, preterm birth, disruptions in maternal or placental health and phlebotomy. If deficiency occurs during critical periods of brain development, this may lead to permanent alterations in brain structure and function which is not reversible despite later supplementation.
