Developing PhD Nurse Scientists: Do Bachelor of Science in Nursing Honors Programs Help?

Background: The critical need for more nurses with research doctoral degrees to replace vacancies among retiring nursing faculty and nurse administrators is identified. The Future of Nursing report recommends that the number of nurses with PhD degrees double by 2020.

Method: Encouraging nursing students to begin doctoral education early in their careers is essential to meeting this goal now and in the future.

Research evidence for reducing sugar sweetened beverages in children.

Aims And Objectives: Sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) have become commonplace in our society and are positively associated with an increase in body mass index (BMI) in our youth.

Methods: This project presents an evidence-based review of the current research literature from 2001 to 2009 to examine the association between SSBs and children's BMI.

Results: An analysis of nine primary research studies is reported and eight of nine studies support that a decrease or reduction in SSBs by our youth can have a positive impact on their BMI.

Predictors of exercise and effects of exercise on symptoms, function, aerobic fitness, and disease outcomes of rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: To determine the effects of participation in a low-impact aerobic exercise program on fatigue, pain, and depression; to examine whether intervention groups compared with a control group differed on functional (grip strength and walk time) and disease activity (total joint count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein) measures and aerobic fitness at the end of the intervention; and to test which factors predicted exercise participation.

Methods: A convenience sample of 220 adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ages 40-70, was randomized to 1 of 3 groups: class exercise, home exercise using a videotape, and control group. Measures were obtained at baseline (T1), after 6 weeks of exercise (T2), and after 12 weeks of exercise (T3).

Design: A secondary analysis was conducted of data from a cross-sectional survey of 300 adolescents seen at an urban clinic. Using descriptive statistics and path analysis, we examined the direct and indirect effects of independent variables on exercise participation.
