The detection of norm deviations is fundamental to clinical decision making and impacts our ability to diagnose and treat diseases effectively. Current normative modeling approaches rely on generic comparisons and quantify deviations in relation to the population average. However, generic models interpolate subtle nuances and risk the loss of critical information, thereby compromising effective personalization of health care strategies.

Preparing for downstream tasks in AI for dental radiology: a baseline performance comparison of deep learning models.

Objectives: To compare the performance of the convolutional neural network (CNN) with the vision transformer (ViT) and the gated multilayer perceptron (gMLP) in the classification of radiographic images of dental structures.

Methods: Retrospectively collected 2-dimensional images derived from cone beam computed tomographic volumes were used to train CNN, ViT and gMLP architectures as classifiers for 4 different cases. Cases selected for training the architectures were the classification of the radiographic appearance of maxillary sinuses, maxillary and mandibular incisors, presence or absence of the mental foramen and the positional relationship of the mandibular third molar to the inferior alveolar nerve canal.

Machine learning based classification of excessive smartphone users via neuronal cue reactivity.

Excessive Smartphone Use (ESU) poses a significant challenge in contemporary society, yet its recognition as a distinct disorder remains ambiguous. This study aims to address this gap by leveraging functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data and machine learning techniques to classify ESU and non-excessive smartphone users (n-ESU) based on their neural Cue-Reactivity (CR) signatures. By conducting a CR task and analyzing brain activation patterns, we identified spatial similarities between addictive smartphone use and established addictive disorders.

Deep learning for blood glucose level prediction: How well do models generalize across different data sets?

Deep learning-based models for predicting blood glucose levels in diabetic patients can facilitate proactive measures to prevent critical events and are essential for closed-loop control therapy systems. However, selecting appropriate models from the literature may not always yield conclusive results, as the choice could be influenced by biases or misleading evaluations stemming from different methodologies, datasets, and preprocessing techniques. This study aims to compare and comprehensively analyze the performance of various deep learning models across diverse datasets to assess their applicability and generalizability across a broader spectrum of scenarios.

Objectives: To assess the feasibility and tolerability of maternal progesterone therapy as well as the magnitude of the effect on neurodevelopment for fetuses with CHD.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This double-blinded individually randomized parallel-group clinical trial of vaginal natural progesterone therapy vs placebo in participants carrying fetuses with CHD was conducted between July 2014 and November 2021 at a quaternary care children's hospital.

Global MEG Resting State Functional Connectivity in Children with Autism and Sensory Processing Dysfunction.

Sensory processing dysfunction not only affects most individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but at least 5% of children without ASD also experience dysfunctional sensory processing. Our understanding of the relationship between sensory dysfunction and resting state brain activity is still emerging. This study compared long-range resting state functional connectivity of neural oscillatory behavior in children aged 8-12 years with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; N=18), those with sensory processing dysfunction (SPD; N=18) who do not meet ASD criteria, and typically developing control participants (TDC; N=24) using magnetoencephalography (MEG).

Olfactory disorders are common and have consequences for the quality of life of patients. The main causes are post viral upper respiratory tract infections, head trauma and sinonasal disease. However, there are many more less frequent causes which we illustrate by showing three different rare cases.

Evaluating the impact of water reuse educational videos on water reuse perceptions using EEG/event related potential.

As climate change and population growth increasingly stress freshwater resources, government agencies and scientists have recognized the importance of water reuse (the beneficial use of reclaimed or recycled water). While end users (municipalities and farmers) are largely open to exploring water reuse, a barrier to using this water source is the public's negative perception, or the 'yuck factor'. Recognizing that water reuse is becoming a necessity, there is an urgent need to determine how to improve public acceptance of this water source.

Despite evidence that Americans' fear of mass shootings is increasing at a pace that exceeds their likelihood of victimization, the relationship between fear of mass shootings and gun ownership has received minimal attention.

An Open-Label Study of Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation on Behavioral Regulation in a Mixed Neurodevelopmental Clinical Cohort.

Objective: Individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders often report disturbances in the autonomic nervous system (ANS)-related behavioral regulation, such as sensory sensitivity, anxiety, and emotion dysregulation. Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is a method of non-invasive neuromodulation presumed to modify behavioral regulation abilities via ANS modulation. Here we examined the feasibility and preliminary effects of a 4-week CES intervention on behavioral regulation in a mixed neurodevelopmental cohort of children, adolescents, and young adults.

Prospects of nanoparticle-based radioenhancement for radiotherapy.

Anesthesia and Sedation Exposure and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Infants Undergoing Congenital Cardiac Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Children undergoing complex cardiac surgery are exposed to substantial cumulative doses of sedative medications and volatile anesthetics and are more frequently anesthetized with ketamine, compared with healthy children. This study hypothesized that greater exposure to sedation and anesthesia in this population is associated with lower neurodevelopmental scores at 18 months of age.

Methods: A secondary analysis was conducted of infants with congenital heart disease who participated in a prospective observational study of environmental exposures and neurodevelopmental outcomes to assess the impact of cumulative volatile anesthetic agents and sedative medications.
