All starting materials and the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) of a drug product must be subjected to analytical identity (ID) testing as part of the release prior to their introduction into the pharmaceutical manufacturing process. Generally, it is preferable for Quality Control (QC) laboratories to perform ID tests using a simple and fast to perform, yet highly specific, analytical method. This preference also applies to oligonucleotides, an emerging class of APIs, where a combined ID testing strategy should be applied, including intact mass determination and a sequence-specific method.

Degradable starch microspheres (DSM) are used to apply drugs into blood vessels which supply the target organ leading to drug accumulation in the target organ by reduction of the blood flow. The present investigations show that DSM is a very effective embolization material leading to effective and enhanced accumulation of 5-FU within the liver tumor tissue of experimental induced liver cancer in rats.

Materials And Methods: The cytostatics were applied once either as a hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) or were systemically infused via the tail vein. Seven groups were compared with respect to tumor growth and survival times: 5-FU HAI (group I), 5-FU + DSM HAI (group II), PEG-5-FU HAI (group III), PEG-5-FU + DSM HAI (group IV), NaCl HAI (group V), 5-FU i.
Introduction: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have a high analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect and are widely taken for acute and chronic pain. Especially following long-term use, they may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as mucosal ulceration, perforation and strictures in the small and large bowel.
Patient: A 16-year-old female developed colonic perforation and purulent peritonitis after wisdom tooth removal and short-term intake of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
The expression of neuroendocrine marker proteins in undifferentiated colorectal cancers has not yet been studied in great detail. Therefore, the survival of 20 patients with small cell undifferentiated colorectal cancers treated at our institution between 1982 and 1997 (0.8% of all operated colorectal carcinomas) was correlated with the extent of neuroendocrine differentiation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: The peripheral benzodiazepine receptor (PBR) has been implicated in the growth control of colorectal cancer, where PBR-specific ligand-binding is increased 3-4-fold. However, the prognostic relevance of PBR (over) expression has not yet been evaluated in colorectal cancer.
Experimental Design: A 5-year follow-up was performed in 116 consecutive patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer with regional or distant metastases [Union International Contre le Cancer (UICC) stage III, 59 patients; UICC stage IV, 57 patients].
The frequency and prognostic significance of neuroendocrine marker expression in undifferentiated colorectal cancers has not yet been studied in great detail.
