Background: The OPERA trial has shown that a contact X-ray brachytherapy 50 kV (CXB) boost with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) can increase organ preservation (OP) rate for early rectal adenocarcinoma (ADK) of low-mid rectum. We report the results after 5 years of follow-up.

Purpose: The position and orientation of the head is maintained to be relatively similar during the CT / MR imaging process. However, the position / orientation dissimilarities present in the resulting images between patients, or between different scans of the same patient, do not allow for direct comparison of the images themselves or features / metrics extracted from them. This paper introduces a method of defining a coordinate system which is consistent between patients and modalities (CT and MR) for images of the temporal bone, using easily identifiable landmarks within the semicircular canals.

Among a broad diversity of color centers hosted in layered van der Waals materials, the negatively charged boron vacancy (V) center in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is garnering considerable attention for the development of quantum sensing units on a two-dimensional platform. In this work, we investigate how the optical response of an ensemble of V centers evolves with the hBN thickness in a range of a few to hundreds of nanometers. We show that the photoluminescence intensity features a nontrivial evolution with thickness, which is quantitatively reproduced by numerical calculations taking into account thickness-dependent variations of the absorption, radiative lifetime, and radiation pattern of V centers.

During the 2019-2020 academic year, the Southeast Missouri State University College of Education, Health, and Human Studies initiated a college-level Interprofessional Education (IPE) Committee to identify methods for collaboration, interprofessional research opportunities, and cross-disciplinary learning experiences. The IPE Committee determined that IPE was an installed component of the healthcare majors, without significant interactions between programs, and non-healthcare programs were omitted from formal IPE efforts. The exclusion of the non-healthcare academic majors from traditional healthcare initiatives limited faculty and student interactions, notably between the educator preparatory and healthcare programs.

Objectives: Recent studies evaluating fibrinogen replacement in trauma, along with newly available fibrinogen-based products, has led to an increase in debate on where products such as cryoprecipitate belong in our resuscitation strategies. Protection of the environment from radiation fundamentally relies on dose assessments for non-human biota. Many of these dose assessments use measured or predicted concentrations of radionuclides in soil or water combined with Concentration Ratios (CRs) to estimate whole body concentrations in animals and plants, yet there is a paucity of CR data relative to the vast number of potential taxa and radioactive contaminants in the environment and their taxon-specific ecosystems. Because there are many taxa each having very different behaviors and biology, and there are many possible bioavailable radionuclides, CRs have the potential to vary by orders-of-magnitude, as often seen in published data.

Aim: Nonsurgical treatment with chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer is gaining interest as it avoids total mesorectal excision (TME) surgery and stoma. The OPERA trial aims to evaluate whether dose escalation with contact X-ray brachytherapy (CXB) boost improves organ preservation compared to external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) boost. It has been suggested that dose escalation adversely affects surgical outcomes and therefore we report outcomes following TME in OPERA at 36 months.

Optically active spin defects in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are promising quantum systems for the design of two-dimensional quantum sensing units offering optimal proximity to the sample being probed. In this Letter, we first demonstrate that the electron spin resonance frequencies of boron vacancy centers (V_{B}^{-}) can be detected optically in the limit of few-atomic-layer thick hBN flakes despite the nanoscale proximity of the crystal surface that often leads to a degradation of the stability of solid-state spin defects. We then analyze the variations of the electronic spin properties of V_{B}^{-} centers with the hBN thickness with a focus on (i) the zero-field splitting parameters, (ii) the optically induced spin polarization rate and (iii) the longitudinal spin relaxation time.

ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) will provide a detailed investigation of the Jovian system in the 2030s, combining a suite of state-of-the-art instruments with an orbital tour tailored to maximise observing opportunities. We review the Jupiter science enabled by the JUICE mission, building on the legacy of discoveries from the Galileo, Cassini, and Juno missions, alongside ground- and space-based observatories. We focus on remote sensing of the climate, meteorology, and chemistry of the atmosphere and auroras from the cloud-forming weather layer, through the upper troposphere, into the stratosphere and ionosphere.

Background: Low-titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) use has been associated with improved survival and less blood transfusions in adult trauma patients. Its use in pediatric trauma has been shown to be safe when using leukoreduced, LTOWB with anti-A, anti-B antibody titers of <1:50.
