UK Foot and Ankle Thromboembolism (UK-FATE).

Aims: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a potential complication of foot and ankle surgery. There is a lack of agreement on contributing risk factors and chemical prophylaxis requirements. The primary outcome of this study was to analyze the 90-day incidence of symptomatic VTE and VTE-related mortality in patients undergoing foot and ankle surgery and Achilles tendon (TA) rupture.

Acute correction of severe complex adolescent late-onset tibia vara by minimally invasive osteotomy and simple circular fixation: a case series with 2-year minimum follow-up.

Background: Despite multiple published reviews, the optimum method of correction and stabilisation of Blount's disease remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of acute correction of late-onset tibial vara by percutaneous proximal tibial osteotomy with circular external fixation using two simple rings. Weighing up the pros and cons and to establish if this method would be the method of choice in similar severe cases especially in a context of limited resources.

Prophylactic pinning for slipped capital femoral epiphysis: does it affect proximal femoral morphology?

This study was designed to determine whether prophylactic pinning of the unaffected hip in unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis affects the proximal femoral morphology. Twenty-four hips prophylactically pinned were compared with 26 cases observed. The articulotrochanteric distance (ATD) and the trochanteric-trochanteric distance (TTD) were measured.

Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty versus age and gender matched total knee arthroplasty - functional outcome and survivorship analysis.

We compared the medium-term outcomes of age and gender matched patients with unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We retrospectively reviewed the pain, function and total knee society scores (KSS) for 602 UKAs and age and gender matched TKAs between 2001 and 2013. Function scores remained significantly better in UKAs from preoperative until 3years follow up.

Osteoid osteoma.

Osteoid osteomas consist of a nidus with surrounding sclerotic bone. The differential diagnosis covers a wide range of conditions due to the variable presentation of osteoid osteoma. The natural history is for regression to occur within 6 to 15 years with no treatment; however, this can be reduced to 2 to 3 years with the use of aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
