Background: Abnormalities in mineral metabolism in chronic kidney disease are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (K/DOQI) clinical practice guidelines were established in 2003 to address issues in the management of mineral and bone metabolism.
