Prehabilitation in patients with cirrhosis awaiting liver transplantation: protocol of a feasibility study.

Introduction: Patients with cirrhosis awaiting liver transplantation (LT) are often frail, and malnourished. The period of time on the waitlist provides an opportunity to improve their physical fitness. Prehabilitation appears to improve the physical fitness of patients before major surgery.

Aspirin exposure and its association with metal stent patency in malignant distal biliary obstruction: a large international multicenter propensity score-matched study.

Background And Aims: Stent dysfunction is common after ERCP with self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) insertion for malignant distal biliary obstruction (MDBO). Chronic aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid; ASA) exposure has been previously shown to potentially decrease this risk. We aim to further ascertain the protective effect of ASA and to identify other predictors of stent dysfunction.

Laparoscopic trans-cystic common bile duct exploration and treatment of choledocholithiasis in a patient with Roux-en-Y reconstruction after gastrectomy: report of an emergency case.

We present the case of choledocholithiasis with purulent cholangitis treated with laparoscopic approach in a patient with Roux-en-Y reconstruction after total gastrectomy. After cholangiography, the common bile duct was explored with trans-cystic choledochoscopy and the retained stone extracted under direct vision.

Novel Negative Pressure Protective Box in Upper Digestive Endoscopy: A Prospective Case Series.

In the context of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 pandemic, we have developed a novel negative pressure aerosol protector for upper endoscopy (TRACEY). TRACEY is the first endoscopic enclosure to have passed stringent testing for aerosol protection. The following describes its clinical use in a single-center prospective case series.

The Biology of Vasopressin.

Vasopressins are evolutionarily conserved peptide hormones. Mammalian vasopressin functions systemically as an antidiuretic and regulator of blood and cardiac flow essential for adapting to terrestrial environments. Moreover, vasopressin acts centrally as a neurohormone involved in social and parental behavior and stress response.

Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava incidentally detected.

This report presents the case of a 78-year-old man affected by retroperitoneal tumor arising from the lower segment of the inferior vena cava. The patient underwent excision of the tumor and resection of the vena cava. Postoperative histopathologic examination revealed the diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava, a rare tumor of mesenchymal origin.

Thrombosis of celiacomesenteric trunk: report of a case.

Here we present the case of a 79-year-old woman who complained of acute abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Laboratory exams demonstrated a severe metabolic imbalance. Abdominal X-rays showed bowel overdistension and pneumatosis of the stomach wall.

[Treatment of rectal carcinoma: our experience].

Authors' experience with 53 patient operated on for adenocarcinoma of the rectum in Oncologic Surgery Department--University of Messina (Italy) was analysed. The development of mechanical devices has allowed surgeons to perform sphincter-saving in patients with medium-lower tumors of the rectum. In this experience abdominoperineal amputation was performed in cases of distal rectal tumors, local transanal excision was performed in 6 cases.

[Clinical study of residual function and recurrence in patients undergoing partial thyroidectomy for euthyroid nodular goiter].

The different surgical options for the treatment of non toxic nodular goiter led the Authors to study the residual thyroid function following conservative surgery (subtotal thyroidectomy, lobectomy and enucleation). Follow-up showed an overall recurrence rate of 49%, with a higher rate after lobectomy and enucleation than after subtotal thyroidectomy. On the other hand, subclinical hypothyroidism was higher in patients who underwent subtotal thyroidectomy.

[Approach to male breast cancer. Our experience].

Male breast cancer is a rare neoplasia and represents only 1% of all forms of breast cancer. The etiopathogenesis of breast carcinoma is still unknown in both males and females, but an altered hormonal metabolism may play a role in its genesis. The prognosis of breast cancer is slightly worse in males, especially in cases with axillary lymph node metastases.
