Current concepts regarding the biology of aging are primarily based on studies aimed at identifying factors regulating lifespan. However, lifespan as a sole proxy measure for aging can be of limited value because it may be restricted by specific pathologies. Here, we employ large-scale phenotyping to analyze hundreds of markers in aging male C57BL/6J mice.

Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a risk factor for lower extremity arterial disease. Cilostazol expresses antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilator actions and improves the claudication intermittent symptoms. We investigated the efficacy and safety of adjunctive cilostazol to clopidogrel-treated patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus exhibiting symptomatic lower extremity arterial disease, in the prevention of ischemic vascular events and improvement of the claudication intermittent symptoms.

Background And Aims: Abdominal obesity is associated with adverse health implications. However, the assessment of abdominal adiposity is either indirect, like in the case of waist circumference measurement, or difficult in daily clinical practice, like in the case of using reference methods such as computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc. The aim of the current study was to develop and validate, using DXA as reference method, two easy and simple to use protocols, that estimate abdominal fat mass percentage (%AFM) in Greek females and males respectively, based on simple anthropometric measurements.

Proton pump inhibitors are commonly used in clinical practice for the treatment of peptic ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux and are well tolerated by the patients. Their use is rarely associated with hypersensitivity and anaphylactic reactions. According to the reports in the Uppsala Monitoring Center database the frequency of hypersensitivity reactions out of all reported adverse reactions for proton pump inhibitors and H2-histamine receptor antagonists was between 0.

A new sucrose ester, acretoside, has been isolated from the roots of the Greek endemic species Aristolochia cretica and identified as 6-O-p-coumaroyl-beta-D-fructofuranosyl-(2 --> 1)-alpha-D-glucopyranoside (1). In addition, a known sucrose ester, identified as arillatose B, two phenylpropanoid glucose esters, and five derivatives of aristolochic acids have been isolated. Their structures have been elucidated on the basis of MS and NMR data.

Objective: To address the clinical, serologic, pathologic, and immunogenetic features of sicca syndrome that occurs in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), as well as its similarities to, and differences from, sicca syndrome that occurs in primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS).

Methods: A cohort of 283 consecutive unselected SLE patients was evaluated for the presence of associated SS using the American-European classification criteria. Clinical and laboratory parameters in SLE patients with SS (SLE-SS) were compared with those in SLE patients without SS (SLE-no SS) and with a group of 86 unselected patients with primary SS.
