Background: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) occurs frequently in patients with cirrhosis, particularly in those with ascites, and promotes the translocation of gut-derived bacterial products into the portal and systemic circulation. We investigated the effects of SIBO on systemic inflammatory activity, circulatory and renal function, and the degree of liver fibrosis in patients with cirrhosis and ascites.
Methods: Eighty patients with cirrhosis and ascites were prospectively enrolled.
Imaging flow cytometry (ImFC) represents a significant technological advancement in the field of cytometry, effectively merging the high-throughput capabilities of flow analysis with the detailed imaging characteristics of microscopy. In our comprehensive review, we adopt a historical perspective to chart the development of ImFC, highlighting its origins and current state of the art and forecasting potential future advancements. The genesis of ImFC stemmed from merging the hydraulic system of a flow cytometer with advanced camera technology.

Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is the predominant cardiac abnormality in cirrhosis. We investigated the association of LVDD with systemic inflammation and its impact on renal function, occurrence of hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) and survival in patients with cirrhosis and ascites. We prospectively enrolled 215 patients with cirrhosis and ascites.

Recent findings have implicated alterations in the PRDM9, particularly its zinc finger motifs, in the onset and progression of cancer. This association is manifested through genomic instability and the misregulation of genes critical to cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation.

Our aim was to investigate differences in circulating immune cells between type 2 cardiorenal syndrome (CRS-2) patients and CKD patients without cardiovascular disease (CVD). CRS-2 patients were prospectively followed up, with the primary endpoint being all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.

Herein, we set out to analyze the role of iFC in the grading of gliomas and the evaluation of resection margins.
Material And Methods: iFC uses a fast cell cycle analysis protocol (Ioannina Protocol) that permits the analysis of tissue samples within 5-6 min.
Background: Dysregulation of the immune response in the course of COVID-19 has been implicated in critical outcomes. Lymphopenia is evident in severe cases and has been associated with worse outcomes since the early phases of the pandemic. In addition, cytokine storm has been associated with excessive lung injury and concomitant respiratory failure.

Glioma is among the cancers with the highest mortality and morbidity. The complex biology and acquired chemoresistance create a continuous need for novel, effective therapies. In a recent report by Wang et al, an elegant bioinformatic analysis revealed potential functions and underlying chemopreventive mechanisms involving G protein inhibitory α subunit 2 (Gαi2), which activates NF-κB, a master transcription factor in the regulation of glioma.

Nevertheless, the intraoperative identification of meningioma grade is important for modifying surgical strategy in order to reduce postoperative complications.

Transurethral resection is the first line treatment and an accurate assessment of tumor margins might warrant complete tumor removal. Genomic instability and proliferative potential are common hallmarks of cancer cells.

We developed an innovative rapid cell-cycle analysis protocol (the Ioannina protocol) that permitted the intraoperative identification of neoplastic cells in a plethora of malignancies. Herein, we aimed to investigate the potential role of cell-cycle analysis in the intraoperative characterization of gynecological malignancies.

Recent data suggest that NETs are associated with cancer progression and cancer-associated hypercoagulability. Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a lethal type of cancer in which hypercoagulability and cancer-related thrombosis are among the main complications.

Intraoperative Flow Cytometry (iFC) utilizes flow cytometry for DNA content/ploidy and cell cycle distribution analysis during surgery for cancer cell characterization and evaluation of tumor margins. Various types of cancers, including intracranial, head and neck, breast and liver malignancies have been evaluated with iFC.

Recent experimental research in the field has highlighted the importance of natural substances as possible antiglioma agents, also known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action. We have previously shown that natural substances target several surface cluster of differentiation (CD) markers in glioma cells, as part of their mechanism of action.

The aim of our study was to assess the associations of vaccine-induced antibody responses with circulating lymphocytes sub-populations and their respective patterns of alterations in maintenance HD patients and KTRs.
Materials And Methods: We included 34 HD patients and 54 KTRs who received two doses of the mRNA-vaccine BNT162b2.
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged during the post-genomic era as significant epigenetic regulators. Viral-like 30 elements (VL30s) are a family of mouse retrotransposons that are transcribed into functional lncRNAs. Recent data suggest that VL30 RNAs are efficiently packaged in small extracellular vesicles (SEVs) through an SEV enrichment sequence.
