An Ultra-Rapid Biosensory Point-of-Care (POC) Assay for Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Detection in Human Serum.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is the established routine screening tool for the detection of early-stage prostate cancer. Given the laboratory-centric nature of the process, the development of a portable, ultra rapid high-throughput system for PSA screening is highly desirable. In this study, an advancedpoint-of-care system for PSA detection in human serum was developed based on a cellular biosensor where the cell membrane was modified by electroinserting a specific antibody against PSA.

Rubeola keratitis: a photographic study of corneal lesions.

Purpose: Detailed description of the morphology of rubeola keratitis lesions is missing from textbooks and published reports. We performed a detailed analysis of rubeola keratitis lesions by using a photographic slit lamp and ophthalmic dyes.

Methods: Thirty-four eyes of 17 male young adult patients with rubeola keratitis were examined.

Respiratory tract infections in a military recruit setting: a prospective cohort study.

Background: Acute respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are an important cause of morbidity in the military setting. Respiratory viruses are the most frequently implicated pathogens, especially adenovirus and respiratory syncytial virus. We performed this study to investigate the role of factors such as obesity, cigarette smoking, and educational level on the development of respiratory tract infections in a military recruit setting.

Serologic indices of hepatitis B virus infection in military recruits in Greece (2004-2005).

Background: The prevalence of hepatitis B virus infection in Greece has been decreasing over the last decades. However, recent epidemiological data are lacking.

Methods: We studied 1,840 Army recruits from 05/2004 until 10/2005, and performed serological testing for HBsAg, anti-HBsAg, and anti-HBcAg.

Prevalence and predictors of tuberculin skin positivity in Hellenic Army recruits.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading causes of death among infectious diseases worldwide. Despite its low incidence rates in countries of Western Europe and North America, the resurgence of TB in Eastern Europe and the increased immigration from high-incidence countries imply that extreme vigilance is required in order to detect early, treat, and isolate all new cases. In this study, we analyzed the prevalence and predictors of tuberculin skin testing positivity in Hellenic Army recruits.

Autoimmune hepatitis in an HIV infected patient that responded to antiretroviral therapy.

Autoimmune hepatitis is a rare disease with unclear pathogenesis. Several viruses have been proposed to act as triggering agents for the inflammatory process of the disease; however, HIV has only very rarely been reported to be associated. We report a case of a patient with autoimmune hepatitis and HIV infection.
