This study demonstrates the rearrangement of C2-spirooxindoles to the 2-hydroxyhemi-indigo and chromenoindole. The -H-spirooxindole exhibits double proton translocation and its conversion to the ()-2-hydroxyhemi-indigo photoswitch with trifluoroacetic acid, while the -methyl-spirooxindole undergoes structural rearrangement to the chromenoindole. The mechanism of the reactions was proposed, and the structure of the products was confirmed by one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) NMR spectra and X-ray structure analysis.

Melatonin influences arterial biomechanics, and its absence could cause remodeling of the arterial wall, leading to increased stiffness. Direct effects of fentanyl on the aortic wall have also been observed previously. This study aimed to evaluate in vitro the effects of fentanyl on aortic viscoelasticity in a rat model of melatonin deficiency and to test the hypothesis that melatonin deficiency leads to increased arterial wall stiffness.

Serious hematological adverse drug reactions (HADRs) may lead to or prolong hospitalization and even cause death. The aim of this study was to determine the regulatory factors associated with HADRs caused by drugs that were authorized up to July 2023 by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and to evaluate the frequency of HADRs. Using a cross-sectional approach, the type and frequency of HADRs were collected from the Summaries of Product Characteristics of Drugs Authorized by the EMA and analyzed within proprietary, nonproprietary, and biosimilar/biological frameworks.

The influence of the substitution pattern in phthalimide boron difluoride Schiff base complexes as fluorescent molecular rotors has been investigated. Due to their ground-state zwitterionic structures, they have exhibited negative solvatochromism in absorption and blue-green emission with moderate to satisfactory photoluminescence quantum yields in solution. Ground-state and excited-state theoretical calculations and time-resolved emission spectroscopy revealed that the excited-state rotation is triggered by planar-induced charge transfer, resulting in switched emission toward the green region.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a complex disease resulting from the interaction of numerous so-called traditional risk factors and comorbid conditions on the one side (such as dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity, diabetes, hypertension) and genetic factors on the other. The evidence of a genetic contribution to the development of CAD, especially in the last 2 decades is consistent. It is important that a number of established gene polymorphisms in the younger CAD population are in the genes involved in the inflammatory response and tissue maintenance and remodeling processes.

Humans and other primates harbour complex gut bacterial communities that influence health and disease, but the evolutionary histories of these symbioses remain unclear. This is partly due to limited information about the microbiota of ancestral primates. Here, using phylogenetic analyses of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), we show that hundreds of gut bacterial clades diversified in parallel (that is, co-diversified) with primate species over millions of years, but that humans have experienced widespread losses of these ancestral symbionts.

Biomarkers of oxidative stress (OS) are useful in addressing a wide range of research questions, but thus far, they have had limited application to wild mammal populations due to a reliance on blood or tissue sampling. A shift toward non-invasive measurement of OS would allow field ecologists and conservationists to apply this method more readily. However, the impact of methodological confounds on urinary OS measurement under field conditions has never been explicitly investigated.

The ability of long-range proton transport by substitution of 7-hydroxyquinoline at the eighth position with sulfonamide and sulfonylhydrazone rotor units to act as a crane-arm has been studied. Different proton transport pathways triggered by different stimuli have been established depending on the structure of the crane-arms. Solvent-driven proton switching from OH to the quinoline nitrogen (N) site, facilitated by a sulfonamide transporter group in polar protic and aprotic solvents, has been confirmed by optical (absorption and fluorescence) and NMR spectroscopies as well as by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis.

Common metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease significantly contribute to morbidity and mortality worldwide. They are frequently associated with insulin resistance and altered mitochondrial functionality. Insulin-responsive tissues can show changes in mitochondrial features such as oxidative capacity, mitochondrial content, and turnover, which do not necessarily reflect abnormalities but rather adaptation to a certain metabolic condition.

Herein, the spectral and electrochemical characterizations of three different substituted N-phthalimide azo-azomethine (NAA) dyes (L) containing an o-hydroxy group and their NAA-M(II) chelates [M(II): Cu, Ni, Co, Pb] were reported by using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and potentiometric and voltamperometric techniques. The pK value of the dyes as well as the stoichiometry and stability of the NAA-metal chelates were studied, and the stoichiometry was found to be mostly 1:2 (ML) with high complex stability constant values. The sensor activity of N-phthalimide azo-azomethine derivatives toward pH and metal ions has been also investigated and tested for indicator application in acid-base analysis and detection of Cu(II) ions in real samples of surface river water using voltamperometric detection.
