Both the carotid ultrasound and coronary artery calcium (CAC) score quantify subclinical atherosclerosis and are associated with cardiovascular disease and events. This study investigated the association between CAC score and carotid plaque quantity and composition. Adult participants (n = 43) without history of cardiovascular disease were recruited to undergo a carotid ultrasound.

Effect of pharmacologic anti-atherosclerotic therapy on carotid intraplaque neovascularization: A systematic review.

Intraplaque neovascularization (IPN), a key feature of vulnerable carotid plaque, is associated with adverse cardiovascular (CV) events. Statin therapy has been shown to diminish and stabilize atherosclerotic plaque, but its effect on IPN is uncertain. This review investigated the effects of common pharmacologic anti-atherosclerotic therapies on carotid IPN.
