Low-intensity parent- and clinician-delivered support for young autistic children in Aotearoa New Zealand: a randomised controlled trial.

Background: Aotearoa New Zealand does not provide publicly-funded intensive autism support. While parent-mediated supports are promising, children and families may also benefit from direct clinician support. We tested the efficacy of a low-intensity programme involving parent- and clinician-delivered support for autistic children.

Exploring the association of body mass index, mindful and emotional eating, and orthorexia.

Background: Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is defined as a fixation on healthy eating behaviours. Research exploring ON and body mass index (BMI) has been inconsistent, with some findings indicating a positive relationship between ON and BMI, while other studies have suggested no relationship. To date, potential associations with emotional and mindful eating have been explored only in a vegan population.

Effects of subthalamic nucleus lesions and stimulation upon corticostriatal afferents in the 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rat.

Abnormalities of striatal glutamate neurotransmission may play a role in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease and may respond to neurosurgical interventions, specifically stimulation or lesioning of the subthalamic nucleus (STN). The major glutamatergic afferent pathways to the striatum are from the cortex and thalamus, and are thus likely to be sources of striatal neuronally-released glutamate. Corticostriatal terminals can be distinguished within the striatum at the electron microscopic level as their synaptic vesicles contain the vesicular glutamate transporter, VGLUT1.

Effects of zona incerta lesions on striatal neurochemistry and behavioral asymmetry in 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rats.

Analysis of optimal sites for neurosurgical interventions in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) suggests that significant clinical benefits may be achieved by involvement of the zona incerta (ZI). Unilateral electrolytic ZI lesions were made in intact and ipsilaterally 6-hydroxydopamine (6OHDA)-lesioned rats. Extracellular levels of glutamate, dopamine, and its metabolites in the ipsilateral striatum of awake rats were measured by using microdialysis, and tests of behavioral asymmetry were performed.
