A delayed diagnosis of ocular toxocariasis presenting as total monocular retinal detachment in an immunocompetent 57-year-old male.

A healthy 57-year-old man present to outpatient ophthalmological services in southwestern Connecticut with a 16-month history of unilateral periorbital pain, photophobia, and progressively decreasing visual acuity in his left eye. Prior extensive work-up for uveitis in his home state of Mississippi had yielded no etiology for his symptoms, and empiric therapy with glucocorticoid eye drops had not halted their decline. Fundoscopic examination demonstrated total combined retinal detachment of the left eye.
