N. gonorrhoeae, which causes the sexually transmissible infection gonorrhoea, remains a significant public health threat globally, with challenges posed by increasing transmission and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The COVID-19 pandemic introduced exceptional circumstances into communicable disease control, impacting the transmission of gonorrhoea and other infectious diseases.

Here we report the discovery and detailed characterization of an exceedingly slow growing mycobacterium that is closely related to M. tuberculosis for which we have proposed the species name Mycobacterium spongiae sp.

Background: In Australia the incidence of HIV has declined steadily, yet sustained reduction of HIV transmission in this setting requires improved public health responses. As enhanced public health responses and prioritisation of resources may be guided by molecular epidemiological data, here we aimed to assess the applicability of these approaches in Victoria, Australia.
Methods: A comprehensive collection of HIV-1 sequences from individuals diagnosed with HIV in Victoria, Australia, between January 1st 2000 and December 31st 2020 were deidentified and used as the basis of our assessment.
There are reports of poor working conditions for early and mid-career academics (EMCAs) in universities, however, empirical data using validated tools are scarce. We conducted an online, cross-sectional survey using validated tools to assess workplace satisfaction, exposure to workplace abuse, and mental health. Participants included employees of medical and health faculties of two of the largest Australian universities, surveyed between October 2020 and January 2021.

Individuals who are symptomatic but test negative on COVID-19 rapid antigen test devices might have a different respiratory viral infection. We aimed to detect and sequence non-SARS-CoV-2 respiratory viruses from rapid antigen test devices, which could assist in the characterisation and surveillance of circulating respiratory viruses in the community.

Possums are a local wildlife reservoir for M. ulcerans and, although mosquitoes have been implicated in transmission, it remains unclear how humans acquire infection.

In the largest known outbreak of mpox, genomic surveillance efforts have primarily focused on high-incidence nations in Europe and the Americas, with a paucity of data from South-East Asia and the Western Pacific. Here we analyzed 102 monkeypox virus (MPXV) genomes sampled from 56 individuals in Melbourne, Australia.

We passaged a naturally occurring near-ancestral SARS-CoV-2 variant, capable of infecting wild-type mice, and identified viral genomic mutations coinciding with the acquisition of severe disease in young adult mice and lethality in aged animals. Transcriptomic analysis of lung tissues from mice with severe disease elucidated a host antiviral response dominated mainly by interferon and IL-6 pathway activation in young mice, while in aged animals, a fatal outcome was dominated by TNF and TGF-β signaling.

Here, we report the dynamics and durability of recalled spike-specific humoral immunity following Omicron BA.1 or BA.

Here, we reconstruct the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms of carbapenem resistance in a clinical isolate of . A combination of short- and long-read sequencing, machine learning, and genetic and enzymatic analyses established that this carbapenem-resistant strain carries no carbapenemase-encoding genes.

Many bacteria secrete polysaccharides that had been thought to shield bacterial cells from phage attack. We use a comprehensive genetic screen to distinguish that the capsule is not a shield but is instead a primary receptor enabling phage predation.

Using 6 pMHC multimers in a cohort with early and frequent sampling, we define the phenotype and kinetics of recalled and primary T cell responses following Delta or Omicron breakthrough infection in previously vaccinated individuals. Recall of spike-specific CD4 T cells was rapid, with cellular proliferation and extensive activation evident as early as 1 day post symptom onset.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) is defined by the resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative organism, to the first-line antibiotics rifampicin and isoniazid. Mitigating or reversing resistance to these drugs offers a means of preserving and extending their use in TB treatment. R-loops are RNA/DNA hybrids that are formed in the genome during transcription, and they can be lethal to the cell if not resolved.

Here, we define the early kinetics of spike-specific humoral and cellular immunity after vaccination of seropositive individuals and after Delta or Omicron breakthrough infection in vaccinated individuals. Early longitudinal sampling revealed the timing and magnitude of recall, with the phenotypic activation of B cells preceding an increase in neutralizing antibody titers.

To date, however, genomic studies of Treponema pallidum have focused mainly on the northern hemisphere. Here, we aimed to characterise the lineages of T pallidum driving the current syphilis epidemic in Australia.

The patient had a normal CD4+ T-cell count and suppressed HIV viral load and presented with a genital rash in Melbourne, Australia after return from Europe in May 2022. He subsequently developed systemic illness and disseminated rash and 11 days after symptom onset, he was hospitalised to manage painful bacterial cellulitis of the genital area.
