Objective: The contact of the gastric refluxate with the lower esophagus results in an inflammatory-mediated tissue damage. The role of inflammation both in the development and in the advance of Barrett's esophagus (BE) has not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to assess the inflammatory infiltration in metaplastic Barrett's epithelium and to explore the association of microscopic inflammation to healed esophagitis and Barrett's length.

Article Synopsis
  • - Barrett's esophagus (BE) is linked to an increased cancer risk due to changes in the tissue lining the esophagus, and certain biomarkers like VEGF, COX-2, and Ki-67 indicate early malignant changes.
  • - The study analyzed these biomarkers in samples from patients to see how they relate to the length of Barrett's esophagus, distinguishing between long (LSBE) and short (SSBE) segments.
  • - Findings showed that Ki-67 expression was higher in LSBE, while VEGF was more expressed in SSBE, with COX-2 showing no correlation to the length, suggesting different biological behaviors in these two types of Barrett's esophagus.
