Article Synopsis
  • The audit aimed to assess and improve the completeness and accuracy of the National Joint Registry (NJR) dataset specifically for elbow arthroplasty surgeries.
  • In a two-phase approach, Phase 1 compared NJR data with NHS England Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), identifying thousands of unmatched and inaccurate records, particularly for radial head arthroplasties (RHAs).
  • Phase 2 involved collaboration among 142 NHS hospitals to correct and update records, resulting in an improved completeness of the NJR dataset from 63% to 93% and accuracy from 94% to 98%.

Article Synopsis
  • Cannulated hip screws (CHS) are commonly used in the UK to fix femoral neck fractures, but up to 23% can fail, often requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA) as a salvage procedure.
  • A study analyzed 600 CHS surgeries over 14 years, revealing a 9.2% failure rate, with 55 patients eventually undergoing THA, showing significant improvement in hip scores post-surgery.
  • The findings indicate that while CHS has a low failure rate, those needing THA experience minimal complications and results comparable to patients who had primary THA for hip fractures.

Introduction: The incidence of postoperative periprosthetic fracture has been reported to be higher in polished tapered femoral stems with the CPT stem possibly of greatest concern. We report on the patient and surgical factors in a consecutive cohort of 2892 CPT stems implanted as part of a total hip construct, either electively or for the treatment of a fractured neck of femur (NOF) over a 15-year period.

Methods: The Bluespier departmental database was used to identify any patients who been treated for a Vancouver B periprosthetic fracture around a CPT stem from 2008 to 2021.

Purpose: People living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at a higher risk of hip fracture with an associated increased mortality risk compared to individuals without CKD. Our study aimed to evaluate the clinical assessment tools that best predict mortality risk following hip fracture for patients with CKD.

Methods: Patients with CKD G3b-5D admitted to Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, U.

Introduction: With rising NHS clinical and financial demands, improving theatre efficiency is essential to maintain quality of patient care. Consistent teams and consultant presence have been shown to improve outcomes and productivity in elective orthopaedic surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact on trauma theatre productivity of different surgeons and anaesthetists working together in a Major Trauma Centre.

We randomized 126 consecutive patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty into group 1: patella denervation (n = 63) and group 2: no patella denervation (n = 63). Assessment was performed preoperatively and at 3, 12 and 24 months post-operatively. Average follow-up of patients was 26.

Trabecular metal has several theoretical advantages for the long-term survival of a tibial component. We report the results of a prospective cohort of 105 consecutive primary total knee arthroplasties using an uncemented trabecular metal (tantalum) tibial component at a minimum 3-year follow-up (range, 36-56 months). There was a significant improvement in Oxford Knee scores and Short Form-12 scores postoperatively.
