Atherosclerotic vascular changes can begin during childhood, providing risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood. Identifiable risk factors such as dyslipidemia accelerate this process for some children. The apolipoprotein B (APOB) gene could help explain the inter-individual variability in lipid levels among young individuals and identify groups that require greater attention to prevent CVD.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic condition influenced by various environmental and genetic factors, and this study focused on the relationship between a specific VDR gene polymorphism (FokI) and vitamin D levels in adults.
  • The research was carried out in Brazil, involving adults from two cities, where results indicated that 9.4% had diabetes and 19.9% faced vitamin D deficiency, with specific genetic variations linked to a higher risk of diabetes.
  • Findings showed a strong connection between vitamin D deficiency and diabetes prevalence, especially in individuals carrying the altered FokI allele, suggesting that both factors contribute to the risk of developing the disease.

Mental disorders are intricate and multifaceted and encompass social, economic, environmental, and biological factors. This study aimed to explore the potential association between vitamin D deficiency and anxiety and depression symptoms in adults, considering the role of the vitamin D receptor gene polymorphism FokI (rs2228570). This was a population-based cross-sectional study with stratified and cluster sampling, evaluating anxiety symptoms (AS) and depression symptoms (DS) in 1637 adults.

Background: The prevalence of intestinal parasites is known to be high among Amerindian populations; further, there are serious problems in the healthcare of these populations in Brazil. The Maxakali, located in the northeastern region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is an indigenous group that still preserves many of its cultural aspects. This study aimed to compare the positivity rate of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in this ethnic group in epidemiological surveys conducted in 1972 and 2014.

Objective: To examine the association of arterial hypertension and the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype (HWP) and hypertriglyceridemic waist-to-height phenotype (HWHP).

Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 1422 male rotating shift workers in Brazil. The HWP was defined as having a waist circumference ≥94 cm and serum triglycerides ≥150 mg/dL, whereas the HWHP was determined by having a waist-to-height ratio ≥0.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of breakfast consumption and estimate its associations with the consumption of food at different degrees of industrial processing and with overweight indicators in Brazilian adolescents.

Methods: This cross-sectional study involved a probabilistic sample of 14- to 19-y-old adolescents enrolled in 29 public schools in the municipality of Juiz de Fora, MG, Southeast Brazil (n = 805). The frequency of breakfast consumption was evaluated via a questionnaire (classified into "do not consume", "sometimes consume", and "regularly consume").

Objective: To analyze the association between changes in body adiposity and length of service on a schedule of rotating shifts.

Methods: The study was a cross-sectional investigation conducted during the years 2012, 2015, and 2018, involving individuals engaged in rotating shifts at a company involved in iron ore extraction situated within the Iron Quadrangle region of Minas Gerais and the southeastern region of Pará, Brazil. Sociodemographic and behavioral data were collected along with anthropometric parameters in order to calculate body mass index (BMI) and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the BOAH and No-apnea scores in identifying obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) risk among male shift workers and heavy machinery drivers.
  • Out of 119 workers studied, a significant percentage showed varying levels of OSA severity based on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), with the BOAH scoring system having moderate sensitivity and high specificity, while the No-apnea score showed better overall performance.
  • The findings suggest that both scoring methods can be valuable in spotting OSA risks, and using both scores together may enhance predictive accuracy for identifying those at risk among this specific worker group.

To evaluate the association between sleep parameters and hypovitaminosis D in rotating shift drivers.  We conducted a cross-sectional study on 82 male rotating shift workers (24-57 years old) with at least one cardiovascular risk factor (such as hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity, physical inactivity, hypertension, and smoking). Polysomnography was used to evaluate sleep parameters.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated how vitamin D levels and daily sunlight exposure affect sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, using a sample of 1709 adults.
  • - Results showed that 19.8% of participants had vitamin D deficiency, and 52.5% reported poor sleep quality; a link between vitamin D deficiency and poor sleep was found in individuals with less sunlight exposure.
  • - Specifically, each 1-ng/mL increase in vitamin D decreased the likelihood of poor sleep quality by 4.2%, indicating sunlight plays a crucial role in the relationship between vitamin D and sleep.

Article Synopsis
  • - The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased physical inactivity among the Brazilian adult population, which poses risks for weight gain and affects glucose levels (HbA1c).
  • - A study involving 1685 participants found that physically inactive individuals during their leisure time were 2.62 times more likely to have elevated HbA1c levels, indicating potential diabetes risk.
  • - The research also showed that about 26.87% of the increase in high HbA1c levels due to inactivity can be attributed to being overweight, suggesting a link between inactivity, weight, and glucose control.

Background And Aim: The growing increase in diet- and behavior-related illnesses has drawn the attention of many epidemiologists who attribute such changes to the epidemiological and nutritional transition. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the association between the combined occurrence of health risk behaviors, such as sedentary lifestyles, high weekly consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), and non-daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, and symptoms of anxiety or depression in adults.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study based on an epidemiological survey in two Brazilian cities.
