Objectives: This study aimed to assess if hormonal contraception administered orally (combined oral contraceptive pill, COC) or vaginally (contraceptive vaginal ring) differentially affected bone calcium retention in young females.

Study Design: Reproductive aged females (18-35yr) not using hormonal contraception were dosed with 50 nCi Ca as CaCl in 10ml of sterile saline (0.9%).

Predicting the Solubility of Amino Acids and Peptides with the SAFT-γ Mie Approach: Neutral and Charged Models.

Modeling approaches that can be used to predict accurately the solubility of amino acids and peptides are of interest for the design of new pharmaceutical processes and in the development of new peptide-based therapeutics. We investigate the capability of the SAFT-γ Mie group-contribution approach to predict the aqueous and alcohol solubility of glycine, alananine, valine, leucine, and serine and of di- and tripeptides containing these amino acids. New SAFT-γ Mie group interactions are characterized using experimental thermodynamic and phase-equilibrium data of compounds and mixtures that contain groups relevant to the amino acids and peptides, but no solubility data (except for the case of glycine).

Beyond the mean-field approximation for pair correlations in classical density functional theory: Reference inhomogeneous non-associating monomeric fluids for use with SAFT-VR Mie DFT.

A free-energy functional is presented to explicitly take into account pair correlations between molecules in inhomogeneous fluids. The framework of classical density functional theory (DFT) is used to describe the variation in the density of molecules interacting through a Mie (generalized Lennard-Jones) potential. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations are performed for the systems to validate the new functional.

Unmasking quantum effects in the surface thermodynamics of fluid nanodrops.

The focus of our study is an in-depth investigation of the quantum effects associated with the surface tension and other thermodynamic properties of nanoscopic liquid drops. The behavior of drops of quantum Lennard-Jones fluids is investigated with path-integral Monte Carlo simulations, and the test-area method is used to determine the surface tension of the spherical vapor-liquid interface. As the thermal de Broglie wavelength, λB, becomes more significant, the average density of the liquid drop decreases, with the drop becoming mechanically unstable at large wavelengths.

DoE identifies innovations that have been successfully implemented in the VHA through a Shark Tank style competition. VHA facility and regional directors bid resources needed to replicate promising practices.

Modeling the Thermodynamic Properties of Saturated Lactones in Nonideal Mixtures with the SAFT-γ Mie Approach.

The prediction of the thermodynamic properties of lactones is an important challenge in the flavor, fragrance, and pharmaceutical industries. Here, we develop a predictive model of the phase behavior of binary mixtures of lactones with hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, esters, aromatic compounds, water, and carbon dioxide. We extend the group-parameter matrix of the statistical associating fluid theory SAFT-γ Mie group-contribution method by defining a new cyclic ester group, denoted cCOO.

Objective: We evaluated Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA's) implementation of My VA Images, a direct-to-patient asynchronous teledermatology mobile application enabling established dermatology patients to receive follow-up care remotely instead of in-person.

Design /participants/approach: Following pilot testing at 3 facilities, the app was introduced to 28 facilities (4 groups of 7) every 3 months using a stepped-wedge cluster-randomized design.

Modeling Sorption of Hydrocarbons in Polyethylene with the SAFT-γ Mie Approach Combined with a Statistical-Mechanical Model to Describe Semicrystalline Polymers.

A recently developed statistical-mechanical model is applied systematically to estimate the fraction of tie-molecules (polymer chains linking different crystals directly or via entanglements) in semicrystalline polyethylene (PE) samples. The amorphous domains of the polymer are divided into constrained interlamellar domains and "free" outer-lamellar domains. A set of model parameters is assigned to each sample by correlating previous experimental measurements and minimizing the difference between the predicted solubility of pure hydrocarbons in the sample and the experimental values.

Using the RE-AIM framework to assess national teledermatology expansion.

Background: Teledermatology has been utilized in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for decades but continues to have incomplete penetration. VA has funded an initiative to enhance access to dermatology services since 2017 to support asynchronous teledermatology for Veterans living in rural areas. As part of an ongoing evaluation of this program, we assessed the teledermatology activity between the fiscal years 2020 and 2022.

Use of a Medication Safety Audit and Feedback Tool in the Emergency Department Is Affected by Prescribing Characteristics.

Background: The Enhancing Quality of Prescribing Practices for Older Veterans Discharged from the Emergency Department (EQUIPPED) program developed an audit and feedback health information technology (IT) solution with the intent to replace the in-person academic detailing service provided by the program. The EQUIPPED dashboard provides emergency department (ED) providers with a personalized view of their prescribing performance.

Objectives: Here, we analyze the association between ED provider characteristics and viewership of the EQUIPPED dashboard, adding insight into strategies for addressing barriers to initial use.

Non-overdose acute care hospitalizations for opioid use disorder among commercially-insured adults: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: Acute care inpatient admissions outside of psychiatric facilities have been increasingly identified as a critical touchpoint for opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment. We sought to describe non-opioid overdose hospitalizations with documented OUD and examine receipt of post-discharge outpatient buprenorphine.

Methods: We examined acute care hospitalizations with an OUD diagnosis in any position within US commercially-insured adults age 18-64 years (IBM MarketScan claims, 2013-2017), excluding opioid overdose diagnoses.

Background: Interprofessional primary care (PC) teams are key to the provision of high-quality care. PC providers often 'share' patients (eg, a patient may see multiple providers in the same clinic), resulting in between-visit interdependence between providers. However, concern remains that PC provider interdependence will reduce quality of care, causing some organisations to hesitate in creating multiple provider teams.
