Importance: Cataract is an important cause of visual impairment in children. Data from a large pediatric cataract surgery registry can provide real-world estimates of visual outcomes and the 5-year cumulative incidence of adverse events.

Objective: To assess visual acuity (VA), incidence of complications and additional eye operations, and refractive error outcomes 5 years after pediatric lensectomy among children younger than 13 years.

We report an unprecedented selective cleavage of aromatic C-C bonds through the insertion of well-defined iridium complexes into the aromatic ring of simple alkylarenes. The insertion occurs at 50-100 °C without the activation of weaker C-H and C-C bonds and gives unique metallacycles in high yields. Key to the success of this approach is metal-induced deformation of the arene ring, which creates temporary ring strain and promotes direct and selective insertion of the metal into the otherwise inert arene ring C-C bonds.

A series of new Ir(III) complexes with carbene ligands that contain a range of benzyl wingtip groups have been prepared and fully characterised by NMR spectroscopy, HRMS, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. All the complexes were active in the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohol substrates in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol to give the corresponding carbonyl compounds. The most active complex bore an electron-rich carbene ligand; this complex was used to catalyse the highly efficient and chemoselective dehydrogenation of a wide range of secondary alcohols to their respective ketones, with turnover numbers up to 1660.

Here we present a series of linked cage complexes of functionalised variants of the octametallic ring {Cr7Ni} with the general formula [(n)Pr2NH2][Cr7NiF8(O2C(t)Bu)15(O2CR)], where HO2CR is a N-heterocycle containing carboxylic acid. These compounds are made by reacting [(n)Pr2NH2][Cr7NiF8(O2C(t)Bu)15(O2CR)] with a variety of simple metal salts and metal dimers. The carboxylic acids studied include iso-nicotinic acid, 3-(4-pyridyl)acrylic acid and 4-pyridazine carboxylic acid.

An enormous family of heterometallic rings has been made. The first were Cr7 M rings where M = Ni(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), and rings have been made with as many as fourteen metal centers in the cyclic structure. They are bridged externally by carboxylates, and internally by fluorides or a penta-deprotonated polyol.

Immobilization of [Mn(bpy)(CO)3Br], (1) and [Mn(bpy((t)Bu)2)(CO)3Br] (2, where (bpy((t)Bu)2) = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine) in Nafion/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on glassy carbon yielded highly active electrodes for the reduction of CO2 to CO in aqueous solutions at pH 7. Films incorporating have significantly improved selectivity towards CO2, with CO : H2 ∼ 1 at -1.4 V vs.

We present the first example of an extended 3D framework synthesised without the use of an isolable organic component. This is achieved by the combination of two cage complexes isolated and functionalised prior to synthesis; [(n)Pr2NH2][Cr7NiF8(O2C(t)Bu)14(O2CC5H4N)2] and [Fe2CoO(O2C(t)Bu)6(HO2C(t)Bu)3], where the former is as a bidentate linker, bridging between three nodes of the latter.

Molecular nanomagnets are attractive candidate qubits because of their wide inter- and intra-molecular tunability. Uniform magnetic pulses could be exploited to implement one- and two-qubit gates in presence of a properly engineered pattern of interactions, but the synthesis of suitable and potentially scalable supramolecular complexes has proven a very hard task. Indeed, no quantum algorithms have ever been implemented, not even a proof-of-principle two-qubit gate.

Compounds of general formula [Cr7MF3(Etglu)(O2C(t)Bu)15(Phpy)] [H5Etglu = N-ethyl-d-glucamine; Phpy = 4-phenylpyridine; M = Zn (1), Mn (2), Ni (3)] have been prepared. The structures contain an irregular octagon of metal sites formed around the penta-deprotonated Etglu(5-) ligand; the chirality of N-ethyl-d-glucamine is retained in the final product. The seven Cr(III) sites have a range of coordination environments, and the divalent metal site is crystallographically identified and has a Phpy ligand attached to it.

Ring a ring of roses: Spectacular nanoscale molecular assemblies have been created by design of individual polymetallic components that are then linked together through simple reactions. These include an assembly where six octametallic rings surround a dodecametallic central ring.

We present a synthetic, structural, theoretical, and spectroscopic study of a family of heterometallic ring dimers which have the formula [{Cr(7)NiF(3)(Etglu)(O(2)CtBu)(15)}(2)(NLN)], in which Etglu is the pentadeprotonated form of the sugar N-ethyl-D-glucamine, and NLN is an aromatic bridging diimine ligand. By varying NLN we are able to adjust the strength of the interaction between rings with the aim of understanding how to tune our system to achieve weak magnetic communication between the spins, a prerequisite for quantum entanglement. Micro-SQUID and EPR data reveal that the magnetic coupling between rings is partly related to the through-bond distance between the spin centers, but also depends on spin-polarization mechanisms and torsion angles between aromatic rings.

We report 2 patients with stable keratoconus and high myopia who benefited from implantation of an iris-supported phakic intraocular lens (Verisyse, AMO) for correction of their refractive error. Both patients had a postoperative uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40. Endothelial cell density showed at most a 4% decrease, and no evidence of keratoconus progression was witnessed.

Age and body mass index (BMI) have been shown to correlate with an increased incidence of failure in identifying a sentinel lymph node (SLN). Mapping senior, overweight adults is common; therefore, the relationship of patient age and BMI on SLN biopsy success is essential. This study examines the mapping failures as they relate to age and BMI.
