Michael T. Trese, MD (1946-2022), a vitreoretinal surgeon, made significant contributions to the field of retina. Although most known for his work in pediatric retina surgery, he was a pioneer in areas such as medical retina, translational research, and telemedicine.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: To describe and evaluate the effectiveness of the microscope and lens tilting technique associated with the three-dimensional viewing system for improving the peripheral retinal view in noncontact lens vitreoretinal surgeries.
Methods: Prospective, single-center, single-surgeon, consecutive case series of 25 patients undergoing vitrectomy for macular surgeries with three-dimensional visualization system. At the end of each surgery, the microscope and the noncontact lens were rotated by 20° in a direction opposite to the rotation of the eye to extend the peripheral visual field.
Purpose: Although pivotal trials have demonstrated efficacy of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy in neovascular age-related macular degeneration, there is a paucity of clinical data about the long-term (>5 years) treatment.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of all patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration who were actively treated, had received >40 anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injections, and were followed for ≥5 years. Snellen-corrected visual acuity, initial drug choice, and times elapsed between treatments were collected.
Purpose: To present a technique for optimizing repair of traumatic retinal detachments (RDs).
Methods: A patient was followed in an outpatient setting with clinical examinations, optical coherence tomography, widefield fundus photography, and anterior segment imaging.
Results: The patient presented with a total RD after ruptured globe repair.
Purpose: To investigate the impact of surgical timing on visual acuity outcomes in retinal detachments based on the preoperative foveal status.
Methods: A retrospective multicenter cohort study was conducted. Cases were stratified into fovea-on, fovea-split, and fovea-off groups.

Study Design/patients And Methods: Images were obtained on 10 eyes with various types of posterior segment pathology. These were analyzed retrospectively by 35 reviewers (21 residents and 14 attending physicians).
Purpose: Endogenous endophthalmitis is a severe intraocular infectious condition requiring rapid diagnosis and treatment. This study examines the incidence of fungal endophthalmitis in patients with elevated beta-D-glucan (BG) levels and those with positive blood culture and the utility of ophthalmology consultation in these patients.
Methods: Single center retrospective consecutive cohort study was conducted on patients at Beaumont Health from 2016-2021 who either had positive fungal blood cultures or an elevated BG level.

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this review is to examine the differences between the current private equity model in ophthalmology practices and the failed physician practice management companies (PPMC) of the 1990s.
Recent Findings: Over the past 5 years, there has been an accelerating expansion of private equity into ophthalmology. In 2022, there are approximately 1400 ophthalmologists affiliated with one of over 30 private equity-controlled entities and further growth appears likely.
Purpose: To assess the closure rate of large full-thickness macular holes (FTMH) associated with epiretinal membrane (ERM) with a combined epiretinal and internal limiting membrane retracting door flap.
Methods: Retrospective chart review of patients treated at a single tertiary retina practice between January 2017 and November 2019. Individuals with FTMH larger than 400 μm and co-diagnosis of ERM who underwent surgical repair with an ERM flap were included.

This is an observational case series of two patients who developed direct retinal damage following neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) laser treatment for symptomatic vitreous floaters. The first patient developed a vitreous hemorrhage and subsequent branch retinal vein occlusion from laser damage to a major retinal venule. The second patient developed a temporal scotoma from a full-thickness retinal break in the posterior pole requiring laser retinopexy.

Purpose: This work investigated interest in telehealth services for patients with chronic retinal conditions.
Methods: A single-center, multi-office study was conducted of patients with chronic retinal conditions who were seen by 1 of 4 physicians during June 2020. Patients whose next appointment was 6 months or later were telephoned.
Purpose: To review the visual and anatomical outcomes of combined anterior and posterior segment surgery for retinal detachment repair.
Methods And Patients: Eight patients with combined retinal and corneal disease underwent combined temporary keratoprosthesis with penetrating keratoplasty combined with pars plana vitrectomy for retinal detachment repair with silicone oil tamponade.
