Lung ultrasound contributes to the diagnosis of perioperative pulmonary edema due to fluid overload and impairment of renal function. Laparoscopic surgery and the patient's intraoperative position can facilitate the emergence of these disturbances as well. A 34-year-old female patient underwent laparoscopic salpingectomy and ovarian resection in the Trendelenburg position because of an unruptured ectopic pregnancy.

Background: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a major cause of vision impairment globally. Obstruction in the retinal venous system is often due to thrombus formation at arteriovenous crossing points, leading to symptoms localized to the affected retinal area. Systemic conditions like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and heart disease are recognized risk factors for RVO, influencing the components of Virchow's triad.

Novel metabolites of the anabolic androgenic steroid 17α-methyltestosterone have been detected in HepG2 cell in vitro metabolic model and in human urine. Their detection was accomplished through targeted gas chromatography-(tandem) mass spectrometry analysis that has been based on microscale synthesized standards. The related synthesis and the gas chromatography-(tandem) mass spectrometry characterization of the analytical standards are described.

Impact of Cataract Surgery on IOP and Ocular Structures in Normotensive Patients and Primary and Exfoliation Open-Angle Glaucoma Patients.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the changes in Intraocular Pressure (IOP) and other ocular parameters: the Anterior Chamber Angle (ACA), Anterior Chamber Volume (ACV), and Anterior Chamber Depth (ACD) during phacoemulsification surgery in Greek patients with normotensive eyes and those with well-controlled Open-Angle Glaucoma (OAG). Additionally, parameters such as the Corneal Thickness (CCT), Axial Length (AL), Central Macular Thickness (CMT), and Retinal Nerve Fibre Layer (RNFL) were also examined.

Patients And Methods: This was a prospective observational case-control study that included 50 phakic eyes, 25 normotensive (Group 1), and 25 with OAG: 15 Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) and 10 Exfoliation Glaucoma (EXG) (Group 2).

Posterior Vitreous Detachment and Its Role in the Evolution of Dry to Wet Age Related Macular Degeneration.

Purpose: To examine the state of the posterior vitreous in eyes with exudative age-related macular degeneration, AMD, non-exudative AMD and in normal eyes.

Study: This is a prospective, cross-sectional study.

Methods: B-scan ultrasonography and Optical Coherence Tomography, OCT were performed in 165 patients older than 65 years with any AMD and in 22 patients older than 65 years with normal eyes in order to diagnose the eyes with complete posterior vitreous detachment, PVD and the eyes with persistent central vitreomacular adhesion, VMA.

Sarcopenia in Rheumatoid arthritis. A narrative review.

Sarcopenia was recently identified as an entity in the ICD-10 classification of October 2016. According to the recommendation of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2), sarcopenia is defined as low muscle strength and low muscle mass, while physical performance is used to categorize the severity of sarcopenia. In recent years, sarcopenia has become increasingly common in younger patients with autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Objective: University teachers, who primarily provide guidance and advice to their students, can play a significant role in educational process transformation. As there is no particular e-learning framework, it is important to understand the factors and variables that may impact both its effective usage and further successful implementation. The current study aims to outline the influence of university faculty, and possible barriers preventing medical students from using apps for learning purposes.

Oxidative stress (OS) affects the anterior ocular tissues, rendering them susceptible to several eye diseases. On the other hand, protection of the eye from harmful factors is achieved by unique defense mechanisms, including enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants. The imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants could be the cause of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEXS), a condition of defective extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling.

Aqueous Humour Ofloxacin Concentration after Topical Instillation in Patients with Dry Eye Disease.

Background and Objectives: A prospective, randomized clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the concentration of ofloxacin in the aqueous humour (AqH) of patients suffering from dry eye disease (DED) after topical instillation. Materials and Methods: Ninety-one (91) cataract patients scheduled for phacoemulsification were categorized into three groups according to DED severity. Group I (n = 17) was comprised of subjects without DED, patients in group II (n = 37) were evaluated as having non-severe DED, while group III (n = 37) consisted of patients suffering from severe DED.

Untargeted Metabolomics Identifies a Novel Panel of Markers for Autologous Blood Transfusion.

Untargeted metabolomics was used to analyze serum and urine samples for biomarkers of autologous blood transfusion (ABT). Red blood cell concentrates from donated blood were stored for 35−36 days prior to reinfusion into the donors. Participants were sampled at different time points post-donation and up to 7 days post-transfusion.

We sought to investigate the association of changes in aortic stiffness and systemic inflammation with response to anti-VEGF therapy.

To fight the COVID-19 pandemic, messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines were the first to be adopted by vaccination programs worldwide. We sought to investigate the short-term effect of mRNA vaccine administration on endothelial function and arterial stiffness. Thirty-two participants (mean age 37 ± 8 years, 20 men) who received the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine were studied in three sessions in a sequence-randomized, sham-controlled, assessor-blinded, crossover design.

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome: The critical role of the extracellular matrix in pathogenesis and treatment.

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEXS) is an age-related condition manifesting mainly in ocular tissues. PEXS is manifested through excess aggregation of fibrillary extracellular material at the anterior part of the eye that consists of a plethora of biomolecules, such as different proteoglycans (PGs) and glycosaminoglycans. PEXS is often linked to increased intraocular pressure, and can also lead to pseudoexfoliation glaucoma with very poor prognosis.

Integrating Whole Blood Transcriptomic Collection Procedures Into the Current Anti-Doping Testing System, Including Long-Term Storage and Re-Testing of Anti-Doping Samples.

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) administration studies involving transcriptomic approaches have demonstrated a gene expression signature that could aid blood doping detection. However, current anti-doping testing does not involve collecting whole blood into tubes with RNA preservative. This study investigated if whole blood in long-term storage and whole blood left over from standard hematological testing in short-term storage could be used for transcriptomic analysis despite lacking RNA preservation.
