Sponges harbour complex microbiomes and as ancient metazoans and important ecosystem players are emerging as powerful models to understand the evolution and ecology of symbiotic interactions. Metagenomic studies have previously described the functional features of sponge symbionts, however, little is known about the metabolic interactions and processes that occur under different environmental conditions. To address this issue, we construct here constraint-based, genome-scale metabolic networks for the microbiome of the sponge Stylissa sp.

Owing to their rapid cooling rate and hence loss-limited propagation distance, cosmic-ray electrons and positrons (CRe) at very high energies probe local cosmic-ray accelerators and provide constraints on exotic production mechanisms such as annihilation of dark matter particles. We present a high-statistics measurement of the spectrum of CRe candidate events from 0.3 to 40 TeV with the High Energy Stereoscopic System, covering 2 orders of magnitude in energy and reaching a proton rejection power of better than 10^{4}.

Article Synopsis
  • Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is a rare inflammatory condition that includes symptoms like daily fevers, joint pain, skin rashes, and spleen enlargement, often requiring tests to rule out blood cancers.
  • A case study of a 38-year-old man revealed symptoms such as fatigue, high fever, night sweats, and skin rashes, leading to extensive testing, including CT and PET/CT scans that showed enlarged lymph nodes and high metabolic activity in his spleen and bone marrow.
  • Ultimately, biopsies of the lymph node and bone marrow showed signs of hyperreactivity but no cancer, confirming AOSD as a diagnosis of exclusion, particularly when high ferritin levels and systemic symptoms are present

Article Synopsis
  • * It found that 269 patients (3.1%) had C. acnes endocarditis, primarily affecting younger individuals with native valves, while prosthetic valve cases were more frequent in older age groups.
  • * Although survival rates were better for native valve cases, the incidence of C. acnes endocarditis is concerning and requires specialized diagnostic methods, but surgical outcomes were generally acceptable.

Background: Primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas (PCBCLs) are rare cutaneous neoplasms with limited literature regarding treatment options and associated treatment outcomes. This study aimed to investigate and present real-world treatment outcomes in patients with PCBCLs.

Methods: All patients with PCBCL who were treated in five major referral centers for cutaneous lymphoma in Greece over 10 years were retrospectively included with their baseline characteristics and treatment-associated outcomes collected and analyzed.

Introduction: Wearable Activity Trackers (WATs) offer real-time feedback on activity levels. We assessed the impact of WAT usage on physicians' exercise habits.

Methods: Physicians from the Athens Medical Association, Greece (n = 742) responded to a self-administered questionnaire evaluating usage of WAT, demographic characteristics, specialty, and physical exercise habits.

Background: End-stage heart failure is associated with high mortality. Recent developments such as the left ventricular assist device (LVAD) have improved patient outcomes. The HeartMate 3 LVAD is a novel centrifugal pump that was developed to provide hemodynamic support in heart failure patients, either as a bridge-to-transplant (BTT), myocardial recovery, or destination therapy (DT).

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose an emerging environmental risk impacting food products and ecosystems. This study analyzes over 150,000 entries from food safety authorities and scientific publications from 2017 onwards. Our findings show that fish & seafood, and biota have the highest PFAS concentrations due to environmental contamination and bioaccumulation.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed the effectiveness and safety of methotrexate (MTX) in treating mycosis fungoides (MF) across different stages, involving 211 patients from five Greek centers, with a median age of 68.3 years.
  • - Results showed an overall response rate of 55.5%, with better outcomes in patients receiving MTX as a first-line treatment and those with erythrodermic disease compared to tumor stage disease.
  • - The study concludes that MTX is a viable first-line treatment option for MF, demonstrating varying progression-free survival rates depending on the disease stage and acceptable safety profiles.

Background/aim: Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a well-known lymphoproliferative disease with very effective treatment approaches primarily relying on purine analogues. However, these treatments are associated with profound and prolonged immunosuppression. Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and extremely aggressive skin tumor with an increased incidence in immunocompromised patients.

Sarcoid-like reactions (SLR) in patients with malignancies are a relatively common finding. Defined by the presence of non-caseating granulomas, SLR does not meet the clinical criteria for classic sarcoidosis. In cancer patients, SLR often presents a challenging differential diagnosis, as it must be distinguished from disease progression due to malignancy.

Hypertension is a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor and displays a rapidly growing incidence due to aging and the acquisition of an unhealthy lifestyle. Hypertension is linked to the development of target organ damage in several vascular beds such as coronary arteries, peripheral, cerebral, and renal arteries. Besides, along with the presence of other cardiovascular risk factors, it aggravates vascular dysfunction due to the aging process.

The Biomedical Imaging and Therapy facility of the Canadian Light Source comprises two beamlines, which together cover a wide X-ray energy range from 13 keV up to 140 keV. The beamlines were designed with a focus on synchrotron applications in preclinical imaging and veterinary science as well as microbeam radiation therapy. While these remain a major part of the activities of both beamlines, a number of recent upgrades have enhanced the versatility and performance of the beamlines, particularly for high-resolution microtomography experiments.

Post-harvest losses during cereal grain storage are a big concern in both developing and developed countries, where spring and durum wheat are staple food grains. Varieties under these classes behave differently under storage, which affects their end storage life. High resolution imaging data of dry as well as spoiled seed are not available for any class of wheat; therefore, an attempt was made to generate 3D data for better understanding of seed structure and changes due to spoilage.

Diphtheria and tetanus could lead to serious morbidity. We aimed to evaluate immunity levels by measuring specific IgG antibodies for diphtheria and tetanus in serum samples from a nationally expanded sample of the Greek population. A geographically stratified sampling approach based on regional units (NUTS level 2) was applied by considering variables such as age group (30-80+) and sex.

  • - Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a rapidly growing skin tumor that can appear as single or multiple lesions, particularly in certain rare genetic syndromes like Ferguson-Smith syndrome and others.
  • - Treatment of these syndromes is complex because of the presence of numerous lesions and other skin cancers, exemplified by a case involving a 40-year-old woman with multiple treatment-resistant keratoacanthomas and invasive squamous cell carcinoma.
  • - The woman was successfully treated with a combination of oral acitretin and topical Fluorouracil for her keratoacanthomas, while surgical intervention was used for her ulcerated cancer, and the study included a review of literature on diagnosis and treatment of similar syndromes
