Glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) are prosthetic-treatment devices for treating primary open-angle glaucoma. Despite their effectiveness in reducing intraocular pressures (IOP), endothelial cell damage (ECD) is a commonly known side-effect. There have been different hypotheses regarding the reasons for ECD with one being an induced increase in shear on the corneal wall.

Aims: This study aims to audit severe TBI referrals to the National Neurosurgical Centre, to evaluate reasons for nonacceptance, assess for differences in the transferred and not transferred cohorts and to analyse observed and expected mortality rates.
Background: There is a lack of consistent, evidence-based guidelines for the management of patients with fever after brain injury. The aim was to update previously published consensus recommendations on targeted temperature management after intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, and acute ischaemic stroke in patients who require admission to critical care.
Methods: A modified Delphi consensus, the Neuroprotective Therapy Consensus Review (NTCR), included 19 international neuro-intensive care experts with a subspecialty interest in the acute management of intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, and acute ischaemic stroke.
The use of egg yolk antibodies-IgY technology-represents an alternative to the production of mammalian immunoglobulins and has several advantages regarding animal welfare and lower costs of production. The use of adjuvants to achieve the hyperimmunization of laying hens plays a key role in the success of the production of high levels of the antibodies. In the present work, two different adjuvant systems (Freund's adjuvants and Montanide ISA 71 VG) were compared to produce IgY anti-Bothrops alternatus.

One major complication associated with prone positioning is the development of pressure ulcers (PUs).
Aim: This study aimed to determine the impact of a prevention care bundle on the incidence of PUs in patients with COVID-19 ARDS undergoing prone positioning in the intensive care unit.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Currently, the only treatable risk factor for glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucoma is commonly caused due to a decreased permeability of the trabecular meshwork, a porous structure at the eye outlet.

However, connecting two patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and differing lung mechanics to a single ventilator is concerning. This study aimed to: (1) determine functionality of a split ventilation system in benchtop tests, (2) determine whether standard ventilation would be superior to split ventilation in a porcine model of ARDS and (3) assess usability of a split ventilation system with minimal specific training.

Neurological compromise is a poor prognosis and mortality factor of the disease, and the thalamus is one of the brain areas most frequently affected.

Here we report the results of a phase 2, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of intravenous (IV) plasma-purified alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) for moderate to severe ARDS secondary to COVID-19 (EudraCT 2020-001391-15).
Methods: Patients (n = 36) were randomized to receive weekly placebo, weekly AAT (Prolastin, Grifols, S.

Despite the potential contribution of drones to healthcare, regulatory barriers exist, including limits on flights beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS). The aim of this project was to deliver an AED BVLOS in Wales.

The interest in adhesive joining has recently expanded to thermal systems having a large number of joints employed for manufacturing and assembly. This study presents surface topology of copper 110 produced by a laser-interference setup that would theoretically yield a periodicity of 1.

Traditionally, the treatment of envenomings has been based on the administration of specific antibodies to neutralize the deleterious effects of toxins. An alternative to mammalian polyclonal antibodies is the use of egg yolk immunoglobulins (IgY) due to their advantages regarding animal welfare and lower costs of production as compared to the conventional production methods.

Secondary objectives are to determine the effects of intravenous Prolastin® on important clinical outcomes including the incidence of adverse events (AEs) and serious adverse events (SAEs).
Trial Design: Phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, pilot trial.
Objective: We aimed to characterize the effects of prone positioning on respiratory mechanics and oxygenation in invasively ventilated patients with SARS-CoV-2 ARDS.
Results: This was a prospective cohort study in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a tertiary referral centre. We included 20 consecutive, invasively ventilated patients with laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 related ARDS who underwent prone positioning in ICU as part of their management.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death in the developed world and aortic aneurysm is a key contributor. Aortic aneurysms typically occur in the thoracic aorta and can extend into the descending aorta. The Frozen Elephant Trunk stent (FET) is one of the leading treatments for the aneurysms extending into the descending aorta.
