Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in Australia, with 15,008 notifications in 2004. This represents only a small fraction of the total cases of Campylobacter. Despite this, outbreaks are rarely reported.

Norwalk-like virus outbreak in Canberra: implications for infection control in aged care facilities.

This paper reports on an outbreak of viral gastroenteritis in three institutions (two aged care facilities and one hospital) in Canberra during the winter of 2002. Norwalk-like virus genotype II was detected in samples from staff and/or residents in all three institutions. A case series investigation was conducted amongst both staff and residents.

Enhancing foodborne disease surveillance across Australia in 2001: the OzFoodNet Working Group.

In 2000, the OzFoodNet network was established to enhance surveillance of foodborne diseases across Australia. OzFoodNet consists of 7 sites and covers 68 per cent of Australia's population.
