Dairy cows mobilise body tissues to support milk production and, because glucose supplies are limited, lipids are used preferentially for energy production. Lipogenic activity is switched off and lipolytic mechanisms in adipose tissue increase through changes in the expression of several key enzymes. This results in a loss of body condition, together with high circulating concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids.

Article Synopsis
  • Cattle and water buffalo share a close genetic relationship, but this study used SNP analysis to explore their differences at the genome level.
  • The research analyzed 91 DNA samples from various water buffalo breeds, identifying a large number of SNPs, out of which only 935 were polymorphic and useful for further analysis.
  • It was found that certain SNPs are significantly linked to fertility and milk production traits in water buffalo, indicating potential areas for breeding research, but more extensive studies are needed to confirm these findings.
