Article Synopsis
  • Visual acuity is important for neurological development in infants, especially preterm ones in NICUs, as it helps them differentiate shapes and objects.
  • A study conducted on 42 preterm infants assessed their visual acuity using specialized cards, finding an average acuity of 0.32 cycles per degree at around 32 weeks of corrected gestational age.
  • Results showed no correlation between visual acuity and gestational age, birth weight, or respiratory support, but did reveal that more days of phototherapy were associated with lower visual acuity.

Objectives: To determine the effects of in-utero exposure to maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection on offspring's neurodevelopment during the first year of life.

Methods: We performed a prospective cohort of babies exposed to SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy, and a control group (CG) of unexposed babies in a low-income area in Brazil. Children's neurodevelopment was assessed using the guide for Monitoring Child Development in the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness context for both groups (at 1,2,3,4,5,6, 9, and 12 months), and the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) for the exposed group (EG) (at 4, 6 and 12 months).

Previous coronavirus epidemics were associated with increased maternal morbidity, mortality, and adverse obstetric outcomes. Reports for SARS-CoV-2 indicate that the obstetric population is at increased risk for severe illness, although there are still limited data on mild COVID-19 infection during pregnancy. To determine the association between mild COVID-19 infection during pregnancy, and maternal and neonatal outcomes, we performed a prospective cohort study among pregnant women with COVID-19 and a control group.

In addition, it works as an important reference for multiprofessional teams. In low-income countries, like Brazil, the attempts to systematize and incorporate the ICF model in health services has been a challenge.

Objective: Visual preference for faces at birth is the product of a multimodal sensory experience experienced by the fetus even during the gestational period. The ability to recognize faces allows an ecologically advantageous interaction with the social environment. However, perinatal events such as premature birth, may adversely affect the adequate development of this capacity.

Facial paralysis in newborns can leave functional sequelae. Determining the evolution and amount of functional losses requires consistent evaluation methods that measure, quantitatively, the evolution of clinical functionality. This paper reports an innovative method of facial assessment for the case of a child 28 days of age with unilateral facial paralysis.
