A novel breathable package system to improve the fresh fig (Ficus carica L. 'Dottato') shelf life.

Background: The postharvest management of fresh figs is a susceptible phase that could impair the quality standards. Given the high perishability, their marketing is limited to around the production areas using open punnets and when marketed non-locally the use of modified-atmosphere packaging enables their quality maintenance up to 7-14 days, depending upon the cultivar, storage temperature, and packaging system. We show the results of the effectiveness of an innovative packaging system endowed with a breathable device (Blow Device®, BD) for fresh fig storage.

Epilepsy, cerebral calcifications, and gluten-related disorders: Are anti-transglutaminase 6 antibodies the missing link?

Purpose: Gluten-related disorders (GRDs) are a group of immune-mediated diseases often associated to neurologic manifestations. Epilepsies with cerebral calcifications, with or without coeliac disease (CD), are rare neurological disorders characterized by childhood-onset focal seizures, often refractory to antiepileptic drugs. Transglutaminase 6 antibodies (anti-TG6) have been considered a biomarker for gluten-related ataxia and neuropathy, but their prevalence in epilepsies with cerebral calcifications is unknown.

We study generalized restricted Boltzmann machines with generic priors for units and weights, interpolating between Boolean and Gaussian variables. We present a complete analysis of the replica symmetric phase diagram of these systems, which can be regarded as generalized Hopfield models. We underline the role of the retrieval phase for both inference and learning processes and we show that retrieval is robust for a large class of weight and unit priors, beyond the standard Hopfield scenario.

Phlebological patients are treated by vascular and general surgeons, dermatologists, phlebologists, angiologists, internists and even general practitioners. Even tough guidelines present a series of recommendations based on evidence-based medicine, guidelines may also be a tool to unify the diagnostic and therapeutic approach in a vast medical field like phlebology.

Development of primary superficial venous insufficiency: the ascending theory. Observational and hemodynamic data from a 9-year experience.

Background: Hemodynamic principles suggest that primary venous insufficiency follows the hydrostatic column of venous pressure of the limbs, and therefore, venous reflux begins at the lower points and rises upwards. To test the hypothesis of an "ascending development" of reflux, we carried an observational study to analyze the natural evolution of lower limb venous insufficiency.
