Workers employed in a graphite electrode producing plant (n = 16) and a coke oven (n = 33) were compared with a control population of maintenance workers in a blast furnace (n = 54). The following parameters were analyzed: concentration of 13 different PAHs in the work environment measured by personal air samplers, concentration of hydroxypyrene in the urine, smoking habits (via urinary thiocyanate levels and a questionnaire) and cytogenetic aberrations in lymphocytes (SCE, HFC and MN). On the basis of PAH levels in the work environment and hydroxypyrene concentrations in the urine, the workers from the graphite electrode producing plant were the most exposed.

Mature spermatozoa contain a number of proteases that are supposed to contribute to their fertilizing ability. The present study was directed at plasminogen activator (PA), a protease that belongs to the group of serine proteases and converts the zymogen plasminogen to the active broad-spectrum protease plasmin. To investigate the possible role of PA in the fertilization process, we have measured sperm-bound PA activity in 63 patients included in an in-vitro fertilization (IVF) programme and assessed their relationship to standard semen parameters and the rate of fertilization.

Sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) in blood lymphocytes, serum tumors markers, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA), and urinary excretion of chromium, cobalt and nickel were determined in 26 male workers occupationally exposed to chromium, cobalt and nickel dust and in 25 controls matched for age and smoking habits. The differences in the urinary excretion of metals between exposed persons and controls were statistically significant. An analysis of variance on the SCE rank values revealed that both exposure status (exposed persons vs.

Objectives: Characterisation of the airborne concentration of 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at various workplaces in a graphite electrode and a coke production plant. Validation of the urinary excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene (hydroxypyrene) as a biological marker of exposure to PAH.

Design: Cross sectional study of workers exposed to PAHs (106 in the graphite electrode producing plant and 16 in the coke works).

The effect of exposure to cadmium, lead, or manganese on male reproductive function was examined in 1988-1989 in Belgian blue-collar workers. The workers were exposed to cadmium in two smelters (n = 83; geometric mean urinary cadmium level = 6.94 micrograms/g of creatinine; mean duration of exposure = 24 years), to lead in a battery factory (n = 74; mean blood lead level = 46.

The objective of the study was to assess whether moderate occupational exposure to lead may be associated with early changes in potential target organs (thyroid, testes, kidney, autonomic nervous system). Workers exposed to lead in a lead acid battery factory (n = 98; mean blood lead 51 micrograms/dl, range 40-75 micrograms/dl) and 85 control workers were examined. None of the indicators of kidney function (in urine: retinol-binding protein, beta 2-microglobulin, albumin, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase; in serum: creatinine, beta 2-microglobulin), endocrine function (follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyroxine, triiodothyronine) and autonomic nervous system (R-R interval variations on the electrocardiogram) were correlated with lead exposure (blood lead or duration of exposure) or showed significantly different mean values between the exposed group and controls.

A study was undertaken to assess the importance of systematically recording occupational histories of patients admitted to an internal medicine unit of a university hospital. Detailed information on current and past employment was obtained with questionnaires and in personal interviews from 200 inpatients over a 12-month period. Twenty-one patients (10.

The ventilatory function of 48 workers occupied on the average for six years in a plant producing diamond-cobalt circular saws was compared with that of 23 control subjects. The geometric mean airborne cobalt concentrations in the two main work areas amounted to 15.2 and 135.

A latex particle immunoassay has been developed for the determination of serum alpha-fetoprotein. The assay consists of incubating the serum sample for 30 min at 50 degrees C with latex particles coated with anti-alpha-fetoprotein immunoglobulin, then quantifying the remaining unagglutinated particles with an optical particle counter. The assay is fully automated with a sampling rate of 40/h.

A case of slight renal tubular dysfunction associated with cataract and anaemia was diagnosed in a 3-month-old black boy in whom high levels of mercury were found in blood and urine. Several arguments suggest that the renal, ocular and haematological defects may have resulted from exposure to mercury during foetal life and the 1-month lactation period due to the extensive use of inorganic mercury containing cosmetics by the mother.

We have performed several cross-sectional epidemiological surveys among workers exposed to cadmium, mercury vapour or manganese in order to assess : their early biological or functional effects; the biological tests allowing an assessment of the amount of metal absorbed or stored in the body; the acceptable exposure levels. Studies have also been carried out among persons exposed to inorganic arsenic in order to define its inactivation mechanism and to develop a biological test of exposure. The kidney is the main critical organ following long-term exposure to cadmium.

A cross-sectional epidemiological study was carried out among subjects exposed to mercury (Hg) vapour, ie, a group of 131 male workers (mean age: 30.9 yr; average duration of exposure, 4.8 yr) and a group of 54 female workers (mean age, 29.

In 62 male workers exposed to mercury vapour for 5.5 years on average, the results of several renal parameters were not significantly different from those found in a well-matched control group (n = 60). Circulating anti-laminin antibodies were found, however, in 8 workers exposed to mercury vapour but in none of the control workers.
