Oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) affects the aging process and increases the likelihood of several diseases. A new frontier in its prevention includes bioactive foods and natural extracts that can be introduced by the diet in combination with specific probiotics. Among the natural compounds that we can introduce by the diet, extract is one of the most utilized since it contains a vast number of bioactive molecules such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, and polysaccharides that have been shown to possess antioxidant, anti-ageing, anti-cancer, and immunomodulatory activity.

Aldolases are crucial enzymes that catalyze the formation of carbon-carbon bonds in the context of the anabolic and catabolic pathways of various metabolites. The bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens N3 can use naphthalene as its sole carbon and energy source by using, among other enzymes, the trans-o-hydroxybenzylidenepyruvate (tHBP) hydratase-aldolase (HA), encoded by the nahE gene. In this study, we present the crystallographic structures of tHBP-HA in three different functional states: the apo enzyme with a phosphate ion in the active site, and the Schiff base adduct bound either to pyruvate or to the substitute with '(R)-4-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxobutanoate'(intermediate state).

Laccases that oxidize low-density polyethylene (LDPE) represent a promising strategy for bioremediation purposes. To rationalize or optimize their PE-oxidative activity, two fundamental factors must be considered: the enzyme's redox potential and its binding affinity/mode towards LDPE. Indeed, a stable laccase-PE complex may facilitate a thermodynamically unfavorable electron transfer, even without redox mediators.

: Currently, there is a lack of a comprehensive classification system for soft-palate defects that provides synthetic information to guide functional reconstructive treatment. Our awareness, shaped by extensive experience, of the superiority of myomucosal flaps to fasciocutaneous flaps in functional palate reconstruction has driven us to introduce a new defect-based classification system and propose a new algorithm for reconstructing soft-palate defects using buccinator myomucosal flaps. : Soft-palate defects were classified into five classes.

Polyethylene (PE) is the most-produced polyolefin, and consequently, it is the most widely found plastic waste worldwide. PE biodegradation is under study by applying different (micro)organisms in order to understand the biodegradative mechanism in the majority of microbes. This study aims to identify novel bacterial species with compelling metabolic potential and strategic genetic repertoires for PE biodegradation.

The surgical treatment of lymphedema has seen advancements in recent years, with supramicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis (sLVA) gaining global acceptance. The integration of 3D exoscopes into microsurgery offers potential ergonomic and educational benefits. However, systematic evaluation of their efficacy in sLVA remains limited.

  • Breakthrough cancer pain (BTcP), especially the non-predictable subtype (NP-BTcP), shows notable gender differences in intensity, frequency, and treatment needs among cancer patients.
  • A study analyzed data from the Italian Oncologic Pain Survey and found that males experienced higher rates of BTcP in the thorax area, required larger doses of therapy, and had lower overall health scores compared to females.
  • Understanding these gender differences could enhance pain management strategies for cancer patients, indicating a need for more research on the characteristics of BTcP across different demographics.

We know of few studies in the international scientific literature that specifically address the evaluation of surgical and clinical progress among physicians undergoing specialist training in maxillofacial surgery. Identifying a reliable tool to accurately assess both theoretical knowledge and surgical skills of trainees is essential. The primary aim of this study therefore was to design a comprehensive assessment tool that is capable of evaluating both the theoretical and practical skills of physicians undergoing specialist training in maxillofacial surgery.

Background: Thoracotomy is one of the surgical procedures most burdened by chronic post-operative pain. There is poor evidence regarding the possibility that even in pediatric patients, thoracotomy can be followed by post-operative pain. The primary objective of this analysis is to identify associations with home pain therapy, pain intensity, and possible protective factors acting on chronic pain in this population.

Background: Tailoring effective strategies for cancer pain management requires a careful analysis of multiple factors that influence pain phenomena and, ultimately, guide the therapy. While there is a wealth of research on automatic pain assessment (APA), its integration with clinical data remains inadequately explored. This study aimed to address the potential correlations between subjective and APA-derived objectives variables in a cohort of cancer patients.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) represents one of the most concerning aspects for cancer patients. The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) is an a priori diet quality index directly associated with health outcomes and HRQoL in cancer survivors in North American populations. We evaluated, in a Mediterranean population, the baseline associations between HEI-2015 and HRQoL in 492 women with breast cancer recruited in a DEDiCa lifestyle trial.

Background: In the evolving field of maxillofacial surgery, integrating advanced technologies like Large Language Models (LLMs) into medical practices, especially for trauma triage, presents a promising yet largely unexplored potential. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using LLMs for triaging complex maxillofacial trauma cases by comparing their performance against the expertise of a tertiary referral center.

Methods: Utilizing a comprehensive review of patient records in a tertiary referral center over a year-long period, standardized prompts detailing patient demographics, injury characteristics, and medical histories were created.

The human gut is a complex environment where the microbiota and its metabolites play a crucial role in the maintenance of a healthy state. The aim of the present work is the reconstruction of a new in vitro minimal human gut microbiota resembling the microbe-microbe networking comprising the principal phyla (Bacillota, Bacteroidota, Pseudomonadota, and Actinomycetota), to comprehend the intestinal ecosystem complexity. In the reductionist model, we mimicked the administration of Maitake extract as prebiotic and a probiotic formulation (three strains belonging to Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium genera), evaluating the modulation of strain levels, the release of beneficial metabolites, and their health-promoting effects on human cell lines of the intestinal environment.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often experience mild cognitive impairment and other neurocognitive disorders. Studies have shown that erythropoietin (EPO) and its receptor have neuroprotective effects in cell and animal models of nervous system disorders. Recombinant human EPO (rHuEPO), commonly used to treat anemia in CKD patients, could be a neuroprotective agent.
