Stereotactic Radiotherapy in Early-Stage Breast Cancer in Neoadjuvant and Exclusive Settings: A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common tumors; better screening policies and multidisciplinary approach allow personalized treatment. Radiotherapy (RT) plays a central role in the multimodal approach in BC, and recent evidence has shown the non-inferiority of hypofractionated treatments. The aim of this study was to describe the feasibility and validity of stereotactic RT (SBRT) in BC in a neoadjuvant and exclusive setting.

Orienting Auditory Attention through Vision: the Impact of Monaural Listening.

The understanding of linguistic messages can be made extremely complex by the simultaneous presence of interfering sounds, especially when they are also linguistic in nature. In two experiments, we tested if visual cues directing attention to spatial or temporal components of speech in noise can improve its identification. The hearing-in-noise task required identification of a five-digit sequence (target) embedded in a stream of time-reversed speech.

Effects of feeding rumen-protected methionine pre- and postpartum on reproductive outcomes of multiparous Holstein cows.

Our primary objective was to evaluate the effect of feeding rumen-protected Met (RPM) in the pre- and postpartum total mixed ration (TMR) on pregnancy per artificial insemination (AI) and pregnancy loss in multiparous Holstein cows. We also evaluated multiple secondary reproductive physiological outcomes before and after AI, including uterine health, ovarian cyclicity, response to synchronization of ovulation, and markers of embryo development and size. A total of 470 multiparous Holstein cows [235 at the University of Wisconsin (UW) and 235 at Cornell University (CU)] were used for this experiment.

Mammary Paget's disease and radiotherapy: a systematic literature review.

Profiles of prostaglandin F2α metabolite in dairy cattle during luteal regression and pregnancy: implications for corpus luteum maintenance†.

Mechanisms of bovine corpus luteum (CL) maintenance during the second month of pregnancy have not been adequately investigated, despite significant reproductive losses. In the first month, interferon-tau is believed to suppress oxytocin-stimulated prostaglandin F2α (PGF) production, yet there are conflicting reports of circulating PGF metabolite (PGFM). In this study, characterization of PGFM and P4 occurred through continuous bihourly blood sampling in cows undergoing CL regression (day 18-21, n = 5), and during the first (day 18-21, n = 5) and second month (day 47-61; n = 16) of pregnancy.

Ovulation and fertility response to commercially available GnRH products in lactating cows synchronized with the Double-Ovsynch protocol.

This study was designed to evaluate whether commonly used gonadorelin products that are commercially available in the United States results in comparable ovulation and pregnancy per AI (P/AI) in synchronized lactating dairy cows. A total of 1411 Holstein cows receiving a Double-Ovsynch protocol (DOV) for conducting the first postpartum AI were randomized to receive one of the following GnRH products throughout the Double-Ovsynch: 1) Cystorelin® (CYS, gonadorelin diacetate tetrahydrate, n = 484); 2) Factrel® (FAC, gonadorelin hydrochloride, n = 482) or; 3) Fertagyl® (FER, gonadorelin diacetate tetrahydrate, n = 515). A subgroup of cows (n = 487) received ovarian ultrasound exams and collection of blood samples for progesterone (P4) analysis.

Dating stalagmite from Caverna do Diabo (Devil´S Cave) by TL and EPR techniques.

A cylindrical fragment of stalagmite from Caverna do Diabo, State of São Paulo, Brazil, has been studied and dated by thermoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance techniques. The thermoluminescence glow curves of stalagmite samples and subsequently gamma irradiated, have shown rise of three peaks at 135, 180 and 265 °C. From electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of stalagmite was possible to clearly identify three paramagnetic centers in the g = 2.

Economic feasibility of cooling dry cows across the United States.

Heat stress during the dry period reduces milk yield in the subsequent lactation of dairy cows. Our objectives were to quantify the economic losses due to heat stress if dry cows are not cooled and to evaluate the economic feasibility of dry cow cooling. We used weather data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to calculate the number of heat stress days for each of the 50 US states.

Pollution in aquatic ecosystems due to negative human activities remains a problem in both freshwater and marine environments and is an ongoing subject of research. Several studies have shown that some fish parasites can be used as a tool for biomonitoring because they demonstrate higher metal accumulation capacity compared to their host tissues. However, compared to acanthocephalans, information regarding the absorption mechanisms and accumulation rates in nematodes is relatively limited.

Fat grafting for breast cancer patients: From basic science to clinical studies.

Fat grafting in the surgical treatment of breast cancer has become popular in a short period of time because of the rising expectations of good esthetic results by the patients as well as the simplicity of the technique; however, the oncological safety for breast cancer patients remains a matter of debate. The procedure raises many questions considering that recent in-vitro studies have shown that fat grafting could promote tumor recurrence through diverse mechanisms, or even facilitate distant metastasis. We present a review of the currently available experimental and clinical data in order to describe and discuss patient selection criteria following breast cancer surgery.

Physiologic, health, and production responses of dairy cows supplemented with an immunomodulatory feed ingredient during the transition period.

This study compared physiological, health, and productive parameters in dairy cows supplemented or not with Omnigen-AF (OMN; Phibro Animal Health, Teaneck, NJ) during the transition period. Thirty-eight nonlactating, multiparous, pregnant Holstein × Gir cows were ranked by body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS), and assigned to receive (n=19) or not (CON; n=19) OMN at 56 g/cow daily (as-fed basis) beginning 35 d before expected date of calving. Before calving, cows were maintained in single drylot pen with ad libitum access to corn silage, and received (as-fed basis) 3kg/cow daily of a concentrate.

Effects of excessive energy intake and supplementation with chromium propionate on insulin resistance parameters in nonlactating dairy cows.

The objective was to compare insulin resistance parameters in cows with adequate or excessive energy intake as well as in cows with excessive energy intake receiving Cr supplementation as chromium propionate. Thirteen multiparous, nonlactating Gir × Holstein cows were ranked by BW and BCS and assigned to 1 of 3 dietary treatments on d 0: 1) diet to meet their ME requirements without Cr supplementation (MAN; n = 4), 2) diet to exceed their ME requirements without Cr supplementation (HIGH; n = 4), and 3) HIGH with 2.5 g/d of chromium propionate (HIGHCR; n = 5, with 10 mg of Cr/cow daily).

Thermoluminescence dating of Brazilian indigenous ceramics.

Two indigenous ceramics fragments, one from Lagoa Queimada (LQ) and another from Barra dos Negros (BN), both sites located on Bahia state (Brazil), were dated by thermoluminescence (TL) method. Each fragment was physically prepared and divided into two fractions, one was used for TL measurement and the other for annual dose determination. The TL fraction was chemically treated, divided in sub samples and irradiated with several doses.

Surgical removal of the breast primary for patients presenting with metastases - where to go?

One of the leading causes of cancer mortality in women worldwide is breast malignancy. In western countries 3.5-10% of newly diagnosed patients are found to have metastases at diagnosis (MBC).

Preoperative assessment of cancer in elderly patients: a pilot study.

The aim of this study was to assess the face validity and practical utility of the Preoperative Assessment of Cancer in the Elderly (PACE) tool in a sample of elderly patients with cancer. A prospective series of such patients with breast, colorectal, upper gastrointestinal, and other cancers were interviewed using the PACE; patients were scored for presurgical assessment using standard measures, including American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status, the Physiological and Operative Severity Score for Enumeration of Mortality and Morbidity (POSSUM), the Portsmouth POSSUM, and World Health Organization performance status before undergoing standard surgical management. Short-term surgical outcome (in terms of mortality and morbidity) and cancer site-specific data were collected to identify the risk groups.

Chemical process to separate iron oxides particles in pottery sample for EPR dating.

Ancient potteries usually are made of the local clay material, which contains relatively high concentration of iron. The powdered samples are usually quite black, due to magnetite, and, although they can be used for thermoluminescene (TL) dating, it is easiest to obtain better TL reading when clearest natural or pre-treated sample is used. For electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, the huge signal due to iron spin-spin interaction, promotes an intense interference overlapping any other signal in this range.

Elements related to heterogeneity of antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity in patients under trastuzumab therapy for primary operable breast cancer overexpressing Her2.

Preliminary results from a pilot trial on trastuzumab's mechanism of action against operable breast tumors overexpressing Her2 suggested a role for antibody-dependent cell cytotoxicity (ADCC). To examine factors affecting ADCC intensity and variability, we extended this study to the phenotypic and functional analysis of circulating mononuclear cells in 18 patients. ADCC was induced by trastuzumab therapy in 15 of 18 patients (83%).

Background: A number of elderly cancer patients do not receive standard surgery for solid tumors because they are considered unfit for treatment as a consequence of inaccurate estimation of the operative risk. To tailor treatment to onco-geriatric series, oncologists are now beginning to use a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). This study investigates the value of an extended CGA in assessing the suitability of elderly patients for surgical intervention.

Breast cancer in elderly women. Optimizing the treatment.

The elderly population is on the rise. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in western women and its incidence increases with age. Despite the epidemiological burden of this condition, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the management of older patients, as treatment planning is mainly based on personal preferences rather than hard data.

Background: Cancer is a disease that particularly affects the elderly and, although surgery is the first treatment choice, many elderly cancer patients do not receive standard surgery because they are considered unfit for treatment due to an inaccurate estimation of operative risk. Pre-operative Assessment of Cancer in the Elderly (PACE) was developed in order to address the need to provide detailed information about the functional reserve of the elderly cancer patient to aid individualised management.

Methods: PACE incorporates a battery of validated instruments including the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG-PS), and American Society Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade.

Early detection of cancer: ideas for a debate.

Even if the overall number of cancer is increasing, the mortality has started to decrease in the Western World. The role of early detection in this decrease is a matter of debate. To assess its impact on mortality it is important to distinguish between diagnosis of cancer in symptomatic patients, and early detection in asymptomatic individuals who may self-refer or who may be offered ad hoc or systematic screening.
