Micrometeorites are estimated to represent the main part of the present flux of extraterrestrial matter found on the Earth's surface and provide valuable samples to probe the interplanetary medium. Here, we describe large and representative collections of micrometeorites currently available to the scientific community. These include Antarctic collections from surface ice and snow, as well as glacial sediments from the eroded top of nunataks-summits outcropping from the icesheet-and moraines.

The origin of micrometeorites (MMs) from asteroids and comets is well-established, but the relative contribution from these two classes remains poorly resolved. Likewise, determining the precise origin of individual MMs is an open challenge. How translocation of proteins across two mitochondrial membranes is coordinated is largely unknown. The Winchcombe meteorite is the most accurately recorded carbonaceous chondrite fall. Although isotopic fractionation of moderately volatile elements has been observed in tektites due to impact heating, the exact nature of the processes taking place during hypervelocity impacts remains poorly understood. By studying Fe in microtektites, here we show that impact events do not simply lead to melting, melt expulsion and evaporation, but involve a convoluted sequence of processes including condensation, variable degrees of mixing between isotopically distinct reservoirs and ablative evaporation during atmospheric re-entry.

Processes like evaporation, flooding, erosion, as well as inflow of saline, often acidic and ion-rich groundwater contribute to the (dynamic) nature of the lakes and the composition of the sediments. The region has previously been described as an analog environment for early Mars due to its geological and geophysical similarities.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRecordings of magnetic fields, thought to be crucial to our solar system's rapid accretion, are potentially retained in unaltered nanometric low-Ni kamacite (~ metallic Fe) grains encased within dusty olivine crystals, found in the chondrules of unequilibrated chondrites. However, most of these kamacite grains are magnetically non-uniform, so their ability to retain four-billion-year-old magnetic recordings cannot be estimated by previous theories, which assume only uniform magnetization. Here, we demonstrate that non-uniformly magnetized nanometric kamacite grains are stable over solar system timescales and likely the primary carrier of remanence in dusty olivine.

The Rhynie Chert in Scotland was originally deposited as siliceous sinter from Early Devonian hot springs and contains exceptionally well-preserved fossils of some of the earliest plants and animals to colonize the land. The aim of this study was to identify biomolecules within the samples through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and aid current techniques in identification of ancient hot spring deposits and their biological components on Mars.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe bulk of the comet 81P/Wild 2 (hereafter Wild 2) samples returned to Earth by the Stardust spacecraft appear to be weakly constructed mixtures of nanometer-scale grains, with occasional much larger (over 1 micrometer) ferromagnesian silicates, Fe-Ni sulfides, Fe-Ni metal, and accessory phases. The very wide range of olivine and low-Ca pyroxene compositions in comet Wild 2 requires a wide range of formation conditions, probably reflecting very different formation locations in the protoplanetary disk. The restricted compositional ranges of Fe-Ni sulfides, the wide range for silicates, and the absence of hydrous phases indicate that comet Wild 2 experienced little or no aqueous alteration.

Nanodiamonds recovered from meteorites, which originate in asteroids, have been thought to be the most abundant type of presolar grain. If that is true, then nanodiamonds should be at least as abundant in comets, because they are thought to have formed further out in the early Solar System than the asteroid parent bodies, and because they should be more pristine.

In this study, we used an in vitro model to test the capacity of tissue transglutaminase to increase the adhesive strength at a cartilage-cartilage interface. Full-thickness cartilage-bone cylinders were prepared from fresh adult bovine shoulder joints, and the superficial half of the hyaline cartilage was then removed to provide a plane surface. Tissue transglutaminase was applied to the freshly cut surface of one cylinder, and a calcium-chloride solution (to act as an activating agent) was applied to that of the other.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTo determine the risk of nephrotoxicity induced by the infusion of radiographic contrast material, we undertook a prospective study of consecutive patients undergoing radiographic procedures with intravascular contrast material. There were three study groups: patients with diabetes mellitus and normal renal function (n = 85), patients with preexisting renal insufficiency (serum creatinine level, greater than or equal to 150 mumol per liter) without diabetes (n = 101), and patients with both diabetes and renal insufficiency (n = 34). The control group consisted of patients undergoing CT scanning or abdominal imaging procedures without the infusion of contrast material who had diabetes mellitus (n = 59), preexisting renal insufficiency (n = 145), or both (n = 64).
