U.S. national trends in cervical cancer screening by sexual orientation and race/ethnicity in cisgender women.

Introduction: Changes in up-to-date cervical cancer screening (CCS) over time by sexual orientation and race/ethnicity were estimated to identify trends in screening disparities.

Methods: This 2024 retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of National Health Interview Survey data (years 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2021) included 40,818 cisgender women aged 21-65 without hysterectomy. Joinpoint analysis was performed to calculate the annual percent change (APC) of up-to-date CCS from 2013 to 2021.

Parenthood status and plasma oxytocin levels predict specific emotion perception abilities.

Superior recognition of positive emotional facial expressions compared to negative expressions is well established. However, it is unclear whether this superiority effect differs between non-parents and parents, for whom emotion perception (EP) is an indispensable skill. Although EP has been shown to be modulated by the neuropeptide oxytocin, a central factor in the development of parental care, very little research has addressed the relationship between EP skills, the transition to parenthood, and plasma oxytocin levels.

The Acceptability and Feasibility of Self-Collected HPV Testing for Cervical Cancer Screening Among Black and Latinx Women in Chicago: Perspectives from the Community.

Introduction: Cervical cancer disproportionally affects Black and Latinx women in Chicago. Black and Latinx women have a higher incidence of cervical cancer diagnosis and lower rates of cervical cancer screening than non-Latinx White women. Self-collected high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) testing has been proposed as a method to address these barriers to screening and prevent cervical cancer.

A woman with mycosis fungoides, vitiligo, and a new hand nodule.

A 70-year-old African American female with a history of stage IV mycosis fungoides in remission presented with a gradually enlarging, red, ulcerated nodule on her right dorsal hand. The lesion was biopsied, and it showed intraepidermal proliferation with cytologic atypia and increased vasculature in the papillary dermis. Immunohistochemical staining indicated a yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1) rearrangement, confirmed by RNA sequencing, revealing a YAP1::MAML2 (mastermind-like transcriptional coactivator 2) fusion.

Development of a Maternal Health Toolkit for Emergency Department Education in Illinois.

Background: Most pregnancy-related deaths in Illinois are preventable. Many of those who died in recent years had at least one emergency department (ED) visit during pregnancy or the postpartum period. This suggests that with the proper training and education, EDs can play an important role in reducing maternal mortality.

Psychological Distress in Women with Fibromyalgia: The Roles of Body Appreciation, Self-Compassion, and Self-Criticism.

Background: While past research detected a direct link between symptoms of fibromyalgia (FM) and psychological distress, body appreciation was suggested as a viable mediator of this link. The aim of the present study was to further develop an explanatory model for the effect of FM on women's psychological distress and identify possible protective and risk factors. Specifically, it was hypothesized that self-compassion would moderate the indirect effect of body appreciation and self-criticism on psychological distress in women with FM.

An atomic boson sampler.

A boson sampler implements a restricted model of quantum computing. It is defined by the ability to sample from the distribution resulting from the interference of identical bosons propagating according to programmable, non-interacting dynamics. Objective: To describe the prevalence of up-to-date cervical cancer screening among lesbian, gay, and bisexual vs heterosexual cisgender women in Chicago.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective, cross-sectional, population-based study of cisgender women residing in Chicago was completed from 2020 to 2022 using data from the Healthy Chicago Survey, which is conducted annually by the Chicago Department of Public Health.

E2F transcription factor-1 modulates expression of glutamine metabolic genes in mouse embryonic fibroblasts and uterine sarcoma cells.

Metabolic reprogramming is considered as a hallmark of cancer and is clinically exploited as a novel target for therapy. The E2F transcription factor-1 (E2F1) regulates various cellular processes, including proliferative and metabolic pathways, and acts, depending on the cellular and molecular context, as an oncogene or tumor suppressor. The latter is evident by the observation that E2f1-knockout mice develop spontaneous tumors, including uterine sarcomas.

Psychological distress in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome: the roles of body image and self-criticism.

Objective: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder associated with reduced quality of life and psychological distress (PD) including anxiety and depression. The mechanisms linking IBS to PD are unclear. Previous studies showed that body image and self-criticism may be contributory factors.

Breastfeeding self-efficacy, body image, body acceptance, and partner support: Associations in Israeli postpartum women.

Problem: Research suggests that breastfeeding self-efficacy (i.e., a mother's perceived ability and confidence to breastfeed her new-born) is associated with body image experiences and wider psychosocial factors.

Racial Disparities in Mycosis Fungoides/Sézary Syndrome-A Single-Center Observational Study of 292 Patients.

Background: Clinical presentation of Mycosis fungoides/Sézary syndrome (MF/SS) in Black and African American (AA) patients can be heterogeneous with poor survival reported in AA/black patients. In this study, we aim to characterize differences between AA/black and white patients with MF/SS.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective single-center hospital-based case-control study including 292 MF/SS patients (146 AA/black matched with 146 white patients).

Adverse Delivery and Neonatal Outcomes Among Women with Severe Maternal Morbidity in Illinois, 2018-2019.

To examine adverse delivery outcomes from 2018 to 2019 severe maternal morbidity (SMM) cases that were reviewed by facility-level review committees in Illinois ( = 666) and describe the burden of adverse delivery outcomes among demographic subgroups, SMM etiology, and whether the SMM event was potentially preventable. This is a descriptive analysis of the SMM review cohort. Consistent with expert recommendations to identify SMM for hospital quality review, SMM was defined as any intensive care or critical care unit admission and/or transfusion of four or more units of packed red blood cells from conception to 42 days postpartum.

Non-invasive Skin Imaging in Cutaneous Lymphomas.

The diagnosis of cutaneous lymphomas is challenging and requires skin tissue for histology and immunophenotyping using immunohistochemistry and molecular studies. In recent years, the role of non-invasive imaging techniques has been described as part of the clinical assessment of cutaneous lymphoma lesions. Imaging modalities such as dermoscopy, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), and high frequency ultrasound (HFUS) have been shown to be very valuable in raising the clinical suspicion for lymphomas of the skin, and in distinguishing cutaneous lymphomas from inflammatory dermatoses such as lupus, psoriasis, or eczema.

Federally Funded Randomized Controlled Trials Increase Analysis and Reporting of Study Outcomes by Sex, Race, and Ethnicity.

We previously examined National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in 2004, 2009, and 2015 and found low compliance with NIH policies on inclusion, analysis, and reporting results for female and minoritized subgroups, with no improvement over time. We conducted a fourth wave of data collection using RCTs published in 2021, comparing current results with previous years. The authors used PubMed to find 657 RCTs published in print in 14 leading US medical journals in 2021.

Advances in the treatment of mycoses fungoides and Sézary syndrome: a narrative update in skin-directed therapies and immune-based treatments.

Mycoses fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) are cutaneous T-cell lymphomas that are often challenging to manage given the absence of reliably curative therapies, at times high symptom burden with significant detriment to quality of life, and need for ongoing treatment for disease and symptom control. Recent developments in skin-directed treatments include optimizing the use of existing topical therapies, the introduction of known dermatological agents and treatment modalities for the specific treatment of MF/SS (such as mechlorethamine gel, calcineurin inhibitor creams, and photodynamic therapy), and novel local and topical agents. For advanced disease, dedicated clinical trials have translated to exciting progress, leading to the approval of brentuximab vedotin (2017) and mogamulizumab (2018) for relapsed MF/SS.

Celiac Disease in Uzbek Children: Insights into Disease Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics in Symptomatic Pediatric Patients.

Background: A few studies on pediatric Celiac Disease (CD) are available from Central Asia. Recent immunogenetic research has highlighted that the HLA-DQ2/8 genetic predisposition to CD as well as the dietary intake of gluten in this geographical area, are comparable to other regions of the world where CD prevalence is known to be 1% or higher.

Methods: This is a prospective and cross-sectional study investigating the prevalence and clinical characteristics of CD in symptomatic children referred to the pediatric gastroenterology department of a tertiary hospital in Uzbekistan from 1 September 2021, until 31 July 2022.

Water interference in the chromatographic analysis of exhaled breath samples: Challenges and mitigation strategies.

This study demonstrates the adverse effects of water in exhaled breath samples on the accuracy of breath biomarker analysis when using gas chromatography. The presence of water in exhaled breath significantly modifies the retention times and peak areas of compounds, particularly for low-boiling, early eluting compounds. To tackle this issue, a two-step approach is introduced.

Volatile organic compounds emitted by conventional and "green" cleaning products in the U.S. market.

Exposure to cleaning products has been associated with harm to the respiratory system, neurotoxicity, harm to the reproductive system, and elevated risk of cancer, with greatest adverse impacts for workers exposed in an occupational setting. Social and consumer interest in cleaning products that are safer for health created a market category of "green" products defined here as products advertised as healthier, non-toxic, or free from harmful chemicals as well as products with a third-party certification for safety or environmental features. In the present study we examined the air quality impacts of cleaning products and air fresheners, measuring the number, concentrations, and emission factors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in an air chamber following product application.
