Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed mixed mould infections in patients with COVID-19-associated pulmonary mucormycosis (CAPM) to determine the prevalence of co-existing COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) and its impact on early mortality.
  • Among 105 patients with CAPM, 20% had mixed mould infections, and those with CAPA experienced significantly higher early mortality rates (42.9%) compared to those without (17.9%).
  • The findings suggest that co-existing CAPA worsens the prognosis for CAPM patients, highlighting the need for further research on mixed mould infections globally.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to compare COVID-19-associated pulmonary mucormycosis (CAPM) with COVID-19-associated rhino-orbital mucormycosis (CAROM), identify factors linked to CAPM, and determine 12-week mortality predictors in CAPM patients.
  • Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis involving 1724 COVID-19 patients, assessing demographics and illness details, and found that CAPM had higher rates of male sex, hypoxemia, and certain health conditions compared to CAROM.
  • Results showed that CAPM had higher 12-week mortality (52.3%) than CAROM (30.5%), with factors like hypoxemia and Aspergillus co-infection increasing mortality risk, while

The extended use of ethambutol beyond 2 months for treating tuberculosis has increased risk of optic neuropathy. We performed a systematic review of studies evaluating optic neuropathy in extended ethambutol use since 2010 and compared the outcome with a similar systematic review (1965-2010) by Ezer et al. Literature search was conducted in PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases.

Background: Though vaccines have been reported as highly efficacious in preventing severe COVID-19 disease, there is emerging data of severe infections, albeit a small number, in vaccinated individuals. We have conducted a retrospective observational study to assess the clinical characteristics, immunological response, and disease outcomes among the vaccinated and unvaccinated patients admitted to the ICU with severe COVID-19 disease.

Methods: .

We performed a case–control study across 25 hospitals in India for the period of January–June 2021 to evaluate the reasons for an COVID-19–associated mucormycosis (CAM) outbreak. We investigated whether COVID-19 treatment practices (glucocorticoids, zinc, tocilizumab, and others) were associated with CAM. We included 1,733 cases of CAM and 3,911 age-matched COVID-19 controls.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality in the ongoing global pandemic. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms that govern innate immune and inflammatory responses during SARS-CoV-2 infection is critical for developing effective therapeutic strategies. Whereas interferon (IFN)-based therapies are generally expected to be beneficial during viral infection, clinical trials in COVID-19 have shown limited efficacy and potential detrimental effects of IFN treatment during SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background: There is conflicting data on the utility of endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) for the detection and subtyping of lymphomas. Herein, we present our experience with EBUS-TBNA in suspected lymphoma.

Methods: This was a multicenter retrospective study of subjects with suspected lymphoma who underwent EBUS-TBNA (July 2011 to June 2017).

Background And Aim: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) and endoscopic ultrasound with an echobronchoscope-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-B-FNA) are useful modalities in the evaluation of mediastinal lymphadenopathy in adults; however, there is sparse data in children. The aim of this multicenter study is to describe the efficacy and safety of EBUS-TBNA and EUS-B-FNA in children with mediastinal lymphadenopathy of undefined etiology.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of consecutive pediatric (<18 years) subjects who underwent EBUS-TBNA or EUS-B-FNA for the evaluation of mediastinal lymphadenopathy.

Background: Limited data are available from India on treatment outcomes with oral epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in newly diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We studied the demographic profile and treatment outcomes of patients with NSCLC, receiving first-line treatment with oral EGFR-TKIs.

Methods: Retrospective study of newly diagnosed NSCLC patients treated with oral EGFR-TKIs over a 4-year period at a tertiary care institute in North India.

Background: The incidence of aplastic anemia (AA) is common in Asia than in western countries.

Methods: In a case-control study conducted at a tertiary care hematology center in northern India, 102 patients of AA and 201 controls of other blood disorders (OBD) were included. Sociodemographic data and exposure to drugs, toxins and radiation were collected from the study population using a standard questionnaire.

Background: Treatment options for central airway tumors include surgery, radiotherapy, and in those with inoperable or emergent airway obstruction, therapeutic bronchoscopy. Herein, we report our experience with the exclusive use of rigid bronchoscope in the management of central airway tumors.

Methods: Retrospective review of charts of patients who underwent rigid bronchoscopy and mechanical coring for the management of central airway (trachea and mainstem bronchi) tumors over a period of 2 years.

Patients with aspergilloma can be safely managed with supportive therapy in absence of massive haemoptysis. We hypothesised that chronic cavitary pulmonary aspergillosis (CCPA) could also be managed on similar grounds. The aim of this prospective, randomised controlled trial was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of itraconazole in CCPA.

Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) is a rare congenital abnormality. Symptomatic presentation in adult life is extremely uncommon. The usual radiological appearance of CCAM is a cystic space-occupying lesion.
