Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are of great concern in steel mill wastes. Therefore, in order to use them as potential fertilizers in soil, risk assessments are needed. Three steel mill wastes were tested as possible amendments for soils at seven different doses (0, 0.

Zinc deficiency is widespread in cultivated soils, limiting the grain crop production and the adequate human nutrition. Several wastes from metallurgical activity can be used as Zn source, but these materials generally also have other potentially toxic elements, such as Pb, that can be highly toxic for plants and humans. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of five chemical extractors (water, citric acid, DTPA, Mehlich 1, and USEPA 3051A) in better correlating with the bioavailable contents of Zn and Pb in soils treated with steel mill wastes (metallurgic press residue (MPR), filter press mud (FPM), and phosphate mud (PM)).

Selenium (Se) is an essential metalloid element for mammals. Nonetheless, both deficiency and excess of Se in the environment are associated with several diseases in animals and humans. Here, we investigated the interaction of Se, supplied as selenate (Se) and selenite (Se), with phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) in a weathered tropical soil and their effects on growth and Se accumulation in Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.

Foliar analysis is very important for the nutritional management of crops and as a supplemental parameter for soil fertilizer recommendation. The elemental composition of plants is traditionally obtained by laboratory-based methods after acid digestion of ground and sieved leaf samples. This analysis is time-consuming and generates toxic waste.

High concentrations of total arsenic (As) have been measured in soils of gold mining areas of Brazil. However, bioaccessibility tests have not yet been conducted on those materials, which is essential for better health risk estimates. This study aimed at evaluating As bioaccessibility in samples from a gold mining area located in Brazil and assessing children's exposure to As-contaminated materials.
