Assessment of listening effort, real-life outcome, auditory working memory and attention in school-going children with cochlear implant.

Purpose: To compare the listening effort using objective test (dual-task paradigm), parents report using abbreviated version of the Speech, Spatial and Quality questionnaire (SSQ-P10) and Teachers' Evaluation of Aural/Oral Performance of Children and Ease of Listening (TEACH), working memory and attention span between children using cochlear implants (CI) and age-matched peers with normal hearing sensitivity, and assess the relationship between listening effort and real-life benefit in children using CI.

Method: Group I included 25 children with normal hearing sensitivity. Group II included 25 children with bimodal cochlear implantation with bilateral severe to profound hearing loss.

A new objective method to estimate the charge integration efficiency in cochlear implant users.

Objective: The present study aimed to objectively assess the charge integration efficiency (CIE) of the auditory nerve using electrically-evoked stapedial reflex threshold (eSRT) measurements in paediatric cochlear implant users.

Design: The eSRT was estimated in two ways: by keeping pulse width constant while increasing pulse amplitude and vice versa. The electrical dynamic range (EDR) obtained for eSRT was measured with increasing pulse amplitude (EDR) and pulse width (EDR) by calculating the difference in charge units between eSRT and behavioural thresholds; further, CIE was estimated.

An injectable hydrogel of porcine cholecyst extracellular matrix for accelerated wound healing.

Hydrogel formulations of xenogeneic extracellular matrices have been widely used for topical wound care because of their exceptional tunability over other formulations like lyophilized sheets, powders, non-injectable gels, pastes, and ointments. This is important in the treatment of wounds with irregular shapes and depth. This study identified an injectable hydrogel formulation of porcine cholecyst extracellular matrix (60%) in medical-grade carboxymethyl cellulose (40%) as vehicle and evaluated its biomaterial properties.

Electrically evoked late latency response using single electrode stimulation and its relation to speech perception among paediatric cochlear implant users.

Introduction: Aided auditory late latency response (LLR) serves as an objective tool for evaluating auditory cortical maturation following cochlear implantation in children. While aided LLR is commonly measured using sound-field acoustic stimulation, recording electrically evoked LLR (eLLR) offer distinct advantages, such as improved stimulus control and the capability for single electrode stimulation. Hence, the study aimed to compare eLLR responses with single electrode stimulation in the apical, middle, and basal regions and to evaluate their relationship with speech perception in paediatric cochlear implant (CI) recipients.

Wound-Healing Efficacy of Insulin-Loaded Strontium-Cross-Linked Alginate-Based Hydrogels in Diabetic Rats.

The wound-healing effect of insulin is well studied and reported. However, prolonged topical application of insulin without compromising its biological activity is still a challenge. In this study, the effect of topically delivered insulin on promoting wound healing in diabetic animals was evaluated.

Comparison of electrically evoked stapedial reflexes in patients with cochlear implants surgically implanted using Veria and posterior tympanotomy approaches.

Objective: The study aimed to compare ipsilateral and contralateral electrically evoked stapedial reflex thresholds in children with a unilateral cochlear implant surgically implanted either through Veria or posterior tympanotomy approaches.

Methods: Forty-nine children using cochlear implants were studied, of whom 27 underwent the Veria approach and 22 underwent the posterior tympanotomy approach. The electrically evoked stapedius reflex thresholds were measured ipsilaterally and contralaterally by stimulating four equally spaced electrodes.

The Study of Postoperative Recall in Patients under Total Intravenous Anesthesia.

Background: The incidence of postoperative recall under total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) is not yet fully established. Avoidance of inhalational agent is a known risk factor for awareness. In addition, lack of reliable technique to monitor drug concentration needed for adequate depth of anesthesia makes TIVA challenging.

Gelatin-Modified Cholecyst-Derived Scaffold Promotes Angiogenesis and Faster Healing of Diabetic Wounds.

Compromised angiogenesis is a major factor contributing delayed wound healing in diabetic patients. Graft-assisted healing using synthetic and natural scaffolds supplemented with micromolecules for stimulating angiogenesis is the contemporary tissue engineering strategy for treating diabetic wounds. This study deployed the carbodiimide chemical reaction for coupling gelatin with a porcine cholecyst-derived scaffold (CDS) for enhancing angiogenesis.

Surface Modification of Polypropylene Mesh with a Porcine Cholecystic Extracellular Matrix Hydrogel for Mitigating Host Tissue Reaction.

Polypropylene (PP) meshes are widely used for repairing skeletal muscle defects like abdominal hernia despite the chances of undesirable pro-inflammatory tissue reactions that demand revision surgeries in about 45% of cases. Attempts have been made to address the problem by modifying the mesh surface and architecture. These procedures have yielded only incremental improvements in the management of overall postoperative complications, and the search for a clinically viable therapeutic strategy continues.

In vitro and molecular docking and analysis of isoxazoline derivatives with DPPH.

A series of isoxazoline derivatives (4a-i) was synthesized from the reaction of 3-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one derivatives (4a-i) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in ethanol at reflux conditions. The compounds were confirmed by spectral (IR, 1H & 13C NMR) and elemental analysis. The compounds were screened for their in vitro antioxidant activity against DPPH.

Intraocular pressure fluctuation following intravitreal dexamethasone implant and incidence of secondary ocular hypertension: a Zambian perspective.

Introduction: to evaluate the effect of dexamethasone biodegradable implant (DEX-I), on intraocular pressure (IOP), to determine the incidence of secondary ocular hypertension (OHT) and to analyze the IOP changes as per the treatment indication in Zambian cohort.

Methods: retrospective consecutive case series of patients receiving one DEX-I between January 2016 and September 2018 with a minimum follow-up of four months in a tertiary care centre in Zambia. The IOP was recorded before the injection and at 1 week, 1, 2, 3 and 4 month after the injection.

Efficacy of Directional Microphones in Hearing Aids Equipped with Wireless Synchronization Technology.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the use of directionality in hearing aids with wireless synchronization on localization and speech intelligibility in noise.

Materials And Methods: This study included 25 individuals with bilateral mild to moderate flat sensorineural hearing loss. For the localization experiment, eight loudspeakers (Genelec 8020B) arranged in a circle covering a 0-360° angle and the Cubase 6 software were used for presenting the stimulus.

Sonographic detection of tracheal or esophageal intubation: A cadaver study.

Background: The correct position of the endotracheal tube is confirmed by various modalities, most of which are not entirely reliable. Ultrasound is now increasingly available to anesthesiologists in the operating theater and is an attractive alternative. To investigate the usefulness of sonography in identifying the correct tracheal tube position in human cadavers.

One-year prevalence and risk factors of tinnitus in children with otological problems.

Introduction: The present study was conducted to find one year prevalence and risk factors of tinnitus in the children (below 18 years) who reported with the ear or hearing related complaint to All India Institute of Speech and hearing, Mysore.

Fibroblast-loaded cholecyst-derived scaffold induces faster healing of full thickness burn wound in rabbit.

Graft-assisted healing is often proposed for clinical management of large-sized third-degree cutaneous burn wounds. Skin-graft substitutes prepared by loading appropriate cell types on suitable scaffolds have been found successful. We have previously shown that cholecyst-derived scaffold prepared by a non-detergent/enzymatic method can be used as skin-graft substitute for promoting healing of full thickness excision wounds in rabbit.

Hairy cell leukemia: clinicopathological and immunophenotypic study.

Hairy cell leukemia (HCL) is a rare neoplasm of mature small B lymphoid cells with characteristic circumferential 'hairy projections' involving the peripheral blood, bone marrow and splenic red pulp. With the advent of immunophenotyping and newer treatment modalities, prolonged remission can be achieved after a definitive diagnosis. Due to the rarity of this condition and presence of only a few case series from India, this work was undertaken.

A comparative study of endoscopic septoplasty versus conventional septoplasty.

Nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum is a common problem encountered by otolaryngologists. A variety of surgical procedures have been tried in the treatment of the same. This study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes and complications of endoscopic and conventional septoplasty.

Effect of Compression, Digital Noise Reduction and Directionality on Envelope Difference Index, Log-Likelihood Ratio and Perceived Quality.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the use of the envelope difference index (EDI) and log-likelihood ratio (LLR) to quantify the independent and interactive effects of wide dynamic range compression, digital noise reduction and directionality, and to carry out self-rated quality measures. A recorded sentence embedded in speech spectrum noise at +5 dB signal to noise ratio was presented to a four channel digital hearing aid and the output was recorded with different combinations of algorithms at 30, 45 and 70 dB HL levels of presentation through a 2 cc coupler. EDI and LLR were obtained in comparison with the original signal using MATLAB software.

Interfacing of dextran coated ferrite nanomaterials with cellular system and delayed hypersensitivity on Guinea pigs.

The study focused on the interfacing of dextran coated ferrite nanomaterials (DFNM) with the cellular system and delayed hypersensitivity on Guinea pigs. In vitro study investigated the cytotoxic potential of DFNM on L929 cells, effect on antioxidant enzymes and Lipid peroxides (LPO) production on rat brain homogenates. DFNM was also repeatedly exposed topically to Guinea pigs for the evidence of skin sensitization and toxicity at the molecular level.

Pyrogens are heterogeneous group of fever-inducing substances derived from Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses. They incite immune response by producing endogenous pyrogens such as prostaglandins and other proinflammatory cytokines like IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. The present study was to analyze the influence of cryopreservation in IL-1β release, a marker for inflammatory response from human lymphocytes, in response to exogenous pyrogenic stimulants.
