Background: Cluster headache (CH) is a significant health concern due to its major socioeconomic consequences and most patients being refractory to conventional strategies. For treatment resistant CH, occipital nerve stimulation (ONS) is considered an effective treatment option. Whereas most patients do not adjust the amplitude of the ONS system, a subset changes the amplitude on a regular basis using their remote control, and are therefore referred to as 'voltage tuners'.

Weak latitudinal trends in reproductive traits of Afromontane forest trees.

Background And Aims: Is the increase in species diversity patterns towards lower latitudes linked to reproductive traits? Plant reproductive organs influence reproductive isolation and hence species divergence. Abiotic differences between temperate and tropical regions can also directly impact on plant reproductive traits. Here we provide a novel overview of southern hemisphere, Afromontane forest tree taxonomical patterns and ask whether reproductive traits relate to latitude, while accounting for environmental (tree height) and evolutionary (biogeographical affinity) selective forces.

Twelve-Month Follow-Up of Different Dentinal Hypersensitivity Treatments by Photobiomodulation Therapy, Nd:YAG and Nd:YAP Lasers.

In this retrospective study, data for three different laser-assisted approaches for the management of dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) was collected ( = 920 teeth). In total, 387 teeth were treated with photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy with 660 nm red light laser (PBM group), 327 were treated with the Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) and 206 were treated with the Nd:YAP laser (1340 nm). To assess the effectiveness of each treatment, a visual analogue scale (VAS) was used, where zero represented no pain at all and ten represented the greatest pain.

Objective: To characterize growth and anthropometric measurements in females with Rett syndrome and compare these measurements with functional outcomes.

Study Design: We obtained longitudinal growth and anthropometric measurements from 1154 females with classic and atypical Rett syndrome seen between 2006 and 2019 in the US Natural History Study. We calculated the Clinical Severity Score, Motor Behavior Assessment score, and arm and leg muscle areas and recorded the functional assessments of arm and hand use and ambulation.

An invasive alien Proteaceae lures some, but not all nectar-feeding bird pollinators away from native Proteaceae in South African fynbos.

Invasive alien plants often influence pollinator visitation to native plants when sharing pollinator guilds. It is of conservation concern when the invasive alien plant is characterized by floral resources that attract pollinators, thereby reducing the reproductive success of native species. This is well studied for insects, but whether the same is true for bird pollinators is largely unknown.

Phylogeographic Patterns in a Semi-Lithophilous Burrowing Scorpion, , from South Africa.

Southern Africa has a diverse endemic scorpion fauna, but a paucity of information currently confounds conservation of the group. Phylogeographic approaches represent a useful tool to identify the patterns and processes which underpin scorpion diversity, but these studies are lacking for southern African species. Among southern African scorpions, the semi-lithophilous has strict habitat requirements, and a distribution historically subjected to profound environmental turnover.

We collected epidemiological data from 212 children under the age of 6 supervised by the Office of Birth and Childhood in the Province of Liège. We analyzed the relationships between the prevalence of dental caries in the studied population sample and the risk factors that are usually associated to dental carries.

Phosphorus recovery as struvite from digested sludge - experience from the full scale.

There is an ongoing paradigm shift; wastewater is often not considered a waste any more, but a source of valuable resources: nutrients (N: nitrogen, P: phosphorus, and K: potassium), energy and water. The recovery of phosphorus from municipal wastewater has gained a lot of attention because of limited phosphate rock reserves and associated geopolitics, and pollution of phosphate rock. At the WWTP of Leuven, Aquafin operates a full scale installation to recover phosphorus as struvite from digested sludge.

Modeling the Distribution of the Invasive Alien Cycad Aulacaspis Scale in Africa Under Current and Future Climate Scenarios.

The cycad aulacaspis scale, Aulacaspis yasumatsui Takagi (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Diaspididae), is native to Southeast Asia but an invasive pest of the gymnosperm order Cycadales in many parts of the world. Aulacaspis yasumatsui was recently reported on the cycad genus Encephalartos in South Africa and is currently categorized as a 'prohibited terrestrial invertebrate' in the invasive species legislation, National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004 (NEM:BA). Encephalartos is endemic to Africa, and 11 species are listed as critically endangered and four species as endangered.

Metabolic and lipidomic profiling of steatotic human livers during ex situ normothermic machine perfusion guides resuscitation strategies.

There continues to be a significant shortage of donor livers for transplantation. One impediment is the discard rate of fatty, or steatotic, livers because of their poor post-transplant function. Steatotic livers are prone to significant ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and data regarding how best to improve the quality of steatotic livers is lacking.

Split-Liver Ex Situ Machine Perfusion: A Novel Technique for Studying Organ Preservation and Therapeutic Interventions.

Ex situ machine perfusion is a promising technology to help improve organ viability prior to transplantation. However, preclinical studies using discarded human livers to evaluate therapeutic interventions and optimize perfusion conditions are limited by significant graft heterogeneity. In order to improve the efficacy and reproducibility of future studies, a split-liver perfusion model was developed to allow simultaneous perfusion of left and right lobes, allowing one lobe to serve as a control for the other.

Closing the phosphorus cycle: Multi-criteria techno-economic optimization of phosphorus extraction from wastewater treatment sludge ash.

The presence of heavy metals in concentrations above legal limit values is one of the main obstacles preventing closure of the phosphorus (P) cycle through directly applying wastewater treatment sludge ash as a fertilizer. Therefore, an alternative procedure is proposed to recover the valuable P from the sludge ash via wet chemical extraction. This comprehensive study uses several inorganic and organic acids, chelating agents and an alkaline solution to establish optimal and cost-effective conditions for wet P extraction from sludge ash.

Exploring donor demographics effects on hepatocyte yield and viability: Results of whole human liver isolation from one center.

Due to the growth of cell-based therapeutic alternatives addressing the shortage of livers for transplant, there is necessity for a reliable source of human hepatocytes. In addition, pharmaceutical research often requires human hepatocytes to assess new drug therapies during development or to achieve FDA approval. Whole human livers producing large quantities of cells from the same donor are ideal, enhancing reproducibility for all purposes, while also allowing for capturing variances in drug-metabolism across different demographics for pharmaceutical testing and development but are limited in availability and quality for research purposes.

Lessons to be learned from toxicological analyses in intoxicated patients and seized materials at an electronic music dance festival.

Medical problems related to illicit drug use are frequently encountered at electronic dance music (EDM) events. In this prospective study, the medical problems and toxicological analyses on intoxicated persons and seized materials are described jointly. The aim of this study is to find out to what extent these efforts may assist in developing prevention strategies and organising on-site care at EDM events.

Biliary Tract Disease in Girls and Young Women With Rett Syndrome.

Objective: We reviewed medical records and conducted a nationwide survey to characterize the clinical features and determine the prevalence of biliary tract disease in girls and women with Rett syndrome (RTT).

Methods: Sixty-two individuals with RTT and biliary tract disease were identified from the membership of Rett Syndrome Organization and patient files of the principal investigator. Medical records of 46 individuals were reviewed for presenting features, diagnostic tests, and treatment outcomes of biliary tract disease.

Dentinal Hypersensitivity Treatment Using Diode Laser 980 nm: In Vivo Study.

The discomfort of patients due to dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the main challenges that dentists face in daily practice. Difficulties in DH treatment gave rise to many protocols which are currently used. The aim of this clinical study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a new protocol on the reduction of dentinal hypersensitivity with diode laser 980 nm and the application of a graphite paste.

Endothelial Dysfunction in Steatotic Human Donor Livers: A Pilot Study of the Underlying Mechanism During Subnormothermic Machine Perfusion.

Background: Steatosis is a major risk factor for primary nonfunction in liver transplantations. Steatotic livers recover poorly from ischemia reperfusion injury, in part due to alterations in the microcirculation, although the exact mechanism is unclear. In this study, we tested if there were any alterations in the shear stress sensing Kruppel-like factor 2 (KLF2) and its likely downstream consequences in the ex vivo perfused human liver endothelium, which would imply perturbations in microcirculatory flow in macrosteatotic livers disrupts laminar flow to evaluate if this is a potential therapeutic target for steatotic livers.

A framework for engaging stakeholders on the management of alien species.

Alien species can have major ecological and socioeconomic impacts in their novel ranges and so effective management actions are needed. However, management can be contentious and create conflicts, especially when stakeholders who benefit from alien species are different from those who incur costs. Such conflicts of interests mean that management strategies can often not be implemented.

Severe liver disease is the 12th leading cause of death in the USA, with organ transplantation often being the only viable option for treatment. However, due to the shortage of viable donor livers, it is estimated that over 1200 patients died in 2015 while waiting for liver transplantation. Connective tissue disease associated interstitial pneumonia: a challenge for both rheumatologists and pulmonologists.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) can be either idiopathic, the result of exposure or may be associated with extrapulmonary diseases. Among the latter, connective tissue diseases (CTDs) make up the largest part. The identification, follow-up and treatment of CTD-associated ILD (CTD-ILD) are a challenge for every physician as ILD can occur before, during and after the diagnosis of CTD.
