African trypanosomes are important parasites in sub-Saharan Africa that undergo a quorum-sensing dependent development to morphologically 'stumpy forms' in mammalian hosts to favour transmission by tsetse flies. However, some trypanosome clades have simplified their lifecycle by escaping dependence on tsetse allowing an expanded geographic range, with direct transmission between hosts achieved via blood-feeding biting flies and vampire bats (Trypanosoma brucei evansi, causing 'surra') or through sexual transmission (Trypanosoma brucei equiperdum, causing 'dourine'). Concomitantly, stumpy formation is reduced and the isolates are described as monomorphic, with infections spread widely in Africa, Asia, South America and parts of Europe.

Herein, we show how the outcome of the competition between two self-replicators, differing in size and building block composition, is different depending on whether the experiments are conducted in a closed vial or in an open and out-of-equilibrium replication-destruction regime. In the closed system, the slower replicator eventually prevails over the faster competitor.

Background: The advent of population-scale genome projects has revolutionized our biological understanding of parasitic protozoa. However, while hundreds to thousands of nuclear genomes of parasitic protozoa have been generated and analyzed, information about the diversity, structure and evolution of their mitochondrial genomes remains fragmentary, mainly because of their extraordinary complexity. Indeed, unicellular flagellates of the order Kinetoplastida contain structurally the most complex mitochondrial genome of all eukaryotes, organized as a giant network of homogeneous maxicircles and heterogeneous minicircles.

Absolute configuration and host-guest binding of chiral porphyrin-cages by a combined chiroptical and theoretical approach.

Porphyrin cage-compounds are used as biomimetic models and substrate-selective catalysts in supramolecular chemistry. In this work we present the resolution of planar-chiral porphyrin cages and the determination of their absolute configuration by vibrational circular dichroism in combination with density functional theory calculations. The chiral porphyrin-cages form complexes with achiral and chiral viologen-guests and upon binding one of the axial enantiomorphs of the guest is bound selectively, as is indicated by induced-electronic-dichroism-spectra in combination with calculations.

Trypanosoma brucei gambiense-iELISA: A Promising New Test for the Post-Elimination Monitoring of Human African Trypanosomiasis.
