Introduction: Acute liver failure (ALF) has no effective treatment other than liver transplantation and is commonly caused by paracetamol overdose. New treatments are needed to treat and prevent ALF. Alternatively-activated macrophages (AAMs) can promote resolution of liver necrosis and stimulate hepatocyte proliferation.

When Self-Compassion Lacks Ferocity: Anger and Responding to False Accusations.

Objective: Self-compassion can help people when they make mistakes, but does it affect how people respond when falsely accused of making a mistake? In this research, we tested the hypothesis that self-compassion is associated with lower levels of anger after a false accusation which, in turn, lowers the likelihood that people will attempt to challenge the accusation.

Method: In Studies 1A (N = 422) and 1B (N = 492), participants imagined that they were playing in an important tennis match and were falsely accused by an official of making an error. In Study 2 (N = 346), participants completed an online survey that, at one point, displayed a message accusing them of plagiarizing one of their responses.

Public Attitudes to Immigration in the Aftermath of COVID-19: Little Change in Policy Preferences, Big Drops in Issue Salience.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected public attitudes toward immigration? Long-term evidence in Europe and the United States suggests attitudes to immigration are relatively stable and, in some cases, becoming more favorable with high volatility instead of the perceived importance of the issue. However, theoretically a global pandemic could exacerbate people's fears of outsiders or that migration may contribute to the disease. By contrast, attitudes could remain stable if their distal drivers prove to be robust enough to withstand the shock of COVID-19.

Is there a significant difference in the oral microbiome in vapers vs non-vapers?

Data Sources: This study was a secondary data analysis of a parent study that was initially designed to assess saliva and exhaled breath for passive e-cigarette vapour exposure in children. The initial study collected patients using convenience sampling of the local community between July 2018 and February 2019 and ethical approval was obtained prior to commencing.

Data Extraction And Synthesis: Eligibility criteria for the parent vapers in the original study included self-reported daily use of e-cigarettes in the presence of children via the use of a questionnaire.

A global network of scholars? The geographical concentration of institutes in migration studies and its implications.

The study of international migration and responses to it has experienced rapid growth in the last three decades: an institutionalisation of migration studies. This paper identifies and specifies and elements of institutionalisation by establishing a global Directory of Migration Research Institutions identifying 282 institutes focused on migration research that were operative between 1945 and 2020. We observe a clear geographical concentration in the Americas and Europe and find that most institutes are in countries with higher economic development (GDP) and net immigration (not emigration).

Down the canal or down the gullet - which form of ibuprofen is best for post-endo instrumentation pain?

Study population and design This randomised observational study compared the analgesic efficacy of intra-canal local ibuprofen paste (Odontocide) with systemic ibuprofen capsules. Ninety patients with symptomatic apical periodontitis scheduled to undergo endodontic therapy were randomised to receive either local ibuprofen, systemic ibuprofen, or no ibuprofen (control). Using a visual analogue scale, pain scores were measured at set time points in the first 48 hours after endodontic instrumentation.

Relationship between ozone and biologically relevant UV at 4 NDACC sites.

Clouds and aerosols, as well as overhead ozone, can have large effects on ultraviolet (UV) irradiances. We use statistical methods to remove cloud effects and mean aerosol effects from spectral UV irradiance measurements to investigate the relationship between UV and total column ozone. We show that for fixed solar zenith angles (SZA), seasonal changes in ozone lead to marked changes in clear-sky UV irradiances.

Evidence of Two-Source King Plot Nonlinearity in Spectroscopic Search for New Boson.

Optical precision spectroscopy of isotope shifts can be used to test for new forces beyond the standard model, and to determine basic properties of atomic nuclei. We measure isotope shifts on the highly forbidden ^{2}S_{1/2}→^{2}F_{7/2} octupole transition of trapped ^{168,170,172,174,176}Yb ions. When combined with previous measurements in Yb^{+} and very recent measurements in Yb, the data reveal a King plot nonlinearity of up to 240σ.

Study selection Two electronic databases (Medline/PubMed and Embase) were searched up to 30 August 2020. Selected papers fitted the following criteria: human studies published in the English language that assessed adult patients over the age of 18 with a presumptive diagnosis of an oral potentially malignant disorder, oral cancer or oropharyngeal cancer. The studies compared either visual inspection or light-based tests with diagnostic biopsy of the lesions.

N-Methyl-d-Aspartate receptor and inflammation in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in schizophrenia.

Lower N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) GluN1 subunit levels and heightened neuroinflammation are found in the cortex in schizophrenia. Since neuroinflammation can lead to changes in NMDAR function, it is possible that these observations are linked in schizophrenia. We aimed to extend our previous studies by measuring molecular indices of NMDARs that define key functional properties of this receptor - particularly the ratio of GluN2A and GluN2B subunits - in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) from schizophrenia and control cases (37/37).

Recruitment problems: a survey of senior dental students' attitudes towards junior jobs in maxillofacial surgery.

Recruitment to specialist training in all 10 surgical specialities has been in decline in recent years. There have, in recent years, been perceived difficulties in recruiting dentists into DCT or SHO roles in Maxillofacial Surgery units with posts going unfilled. This survey examines the reasons behind this recruitment issue.

Colorectal cancer screening participation: Exploring relationship heterogeneity and scale differences using multiscale geographically weighted regression.

Scotland has an organised colorectal cancer screening programme; however, despite proactively offering screening opportunities free to the at-risk population, and also despite using a screening test which may be completed at home, screening participation levels are unequal. Understanding causal pathways linking participation with other population characteristics may be aided by identifying how relationships between the two patterns vary across different localities, and such knowledge may also inform decisions regarding geographical targeting of screening promotion efforts. In this analysis, models calibrated using multiscale geographically weighted regression enabled the assessment of spatial variations of determinants of screening participation levels.

Wellness in medical education: definition and five domains for wellness among medical learners during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

: The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 disease (COVID-19) impacted medical learner well-being and serves as a unique opportunity to understand medical learner wellness. The authors designed a formal needs assessment to assess medical learners' perspectives regarding distress related to disrupted training environments. This Rapid Communication describes findings from a qualitative study which defined medical learner wellness and validated five wellness domains.

Excision of Extensive Orbitozygomaticomaxillary Complex Tumors Combining an Intra- and Extraoral Approach With Transpalpebral Orbital Exenteration.

The junction of the bones of the orbit, caudal maxilla and zygoma intersect to form an anatomically intricate region known as the orbitozygomaticomaxillary complex (OZMC). Given the critical role of the OZMC in the structure, function and esthetics of the skull and midface, tumors in this region present unique challenges to the oromaxillofacial surgeon. Attempts to achieve histologically clean tumor margins in a cosmetically pleasing manner requires excellent intra-operative visualization.

Evidence for Nonlinear Isotope Shift in Yb^{+} Search for New Boson.

We measure isotope shifts for five Yb^{+} isotopes with zero nuclear spin on two narrow optical quadrupole transitions ^{2}S_{1/2}→^{2}D_{3/2}, ^{2}S_{1/2}→^{2}D_{5/2} with an accuracy of ∼300  Hz. The corresponding King plot shows a 3×10^{-7} deviation from linearity at the 3σ uncertainty level. Such a nonlinearity can indicate physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) in the form of a new bosonic force carrier, or arise from higher-order nuclear effects within the SM.

Mandibular fracture repair is complicated by limited availability of bone as well as the presence of the neurovascular bundle and an abundance of tooth roots. Fractures at the location of the mandibular first molar teeth are common and it can be particularly challenging to apply stable fixation. Non-invasive fracture repair techniques utilize intraoral placement of fixation devices typically involving polymerized composites and/or interdental wiring.

Severity and Outcome Assessment score: a useful tool for auditing orthognathic surgery.

Many indices and scoring systems exist for assessing skeletal patterns and malocclusion but none have been universally adopted by teams providing orthognathic surgery in the UK. Using a standardised objective measure of a patient's condition is important both for service provision, treatment allocation, and other clinical governance domains. The Severity and Outcome Assessment tool (SOA) developed by the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) and British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) provides a standardised method of assessing patients throughout the orthognathic pathway and lends itself to case selection, resource allocation and auditing treatment outcomes.

Background: The focused abdominal sonography for trauma (FAST) examination has been reported to be unreliable in pelvic fracture patients. Additionally, given the advent of new therapeutic interventions, such as resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA), rapid identification of intra-abdominal hemorrhage compared with Zone III hemorrhage may guide different therapeutic strategies. We hypothesized that FAST is reliable for detecting clinically significant intra-abdominal hemorrhage in the face of complex pelvic fractures.

Python-based dynamic scheduling assistant for atmospheric measurements by Bruker instruments using OPUS.

Atmospheric remote sensing by instruments such as spectrometers and interferometers often requires scheduling that is dependent on external factors, for example; time and solar (or lunar) zenith angle. Such instruments manufactured by Bruker often use the software package OPUS, which, while useful, is not flexible enough for automatic, repeated, atmospheric measurements of this nature. In this brief paper, we describe ASAP, a Python tool developed to run our network of Fourier transform interferometers in New Zealand and Antarctica.

Bioenergy production and sustainable development: science base for policymaking remains limited.

The possibility of using bioenergy as a climate change mitigation measure has sparked a discussion of whether and how bioenergy production contributes to sustainable development. We undertook a systematic review of the scientific literature to illuminate this relationship and found a limited scientific basis for policymaking. Our results indicate that knowledge on the sustainable development impacts of bioenergy production is concentrated in a few well-studied countries, focuses on environmental and economic impacts, and mostly relates to dedicated agricultural biomass plantations.

Preperitoneal pelvic packing reduces mortality in patients with life-threatening hemorrhage due to unstable pelvic fractures.

Background: A 2015 American Association for the Surgery of Trauma trial reported a 32% mortality for pelvic fracture patients in shock. Angioembolization (AE) is the most common intervention; the Maryland group revealed time to AE averaged 5 hours. The goal of this study was to evaluate the time to intervention and outcomes of an alternative approach for pelvic hemorrhage.
