Objectives: To evaluate the cytotoxic effects of exposing odontoblast cells to a variety of commercial self-adhesive cements polymerized using different activation modes.

Methods: Five cements: MaxCem Elite (MAX), Bifix SE (BSE), G-Cem LinkAce (GCE), Clearfil SA Luting (CAS), and RelyX U200 (U200) were mixed, dispensed into molds, and distributed in groups, according to polymerization protocols: immediate photoactivation; delayed photoactivation (10min self-curing plus light-activation); and chemical activation (no light exposure). Immortalized rat odontoblast cells (MDPC-23) were cultured.

We investigated the role of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the regulation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activity in wild-type CHO-K1 cells and in xylosyltransferase-deficient CHO-745 cells. GAGs inhibit the integrin/FAK/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in CHO-K1 cells, decreasing the phosphorylation of eNOS at Ser1177. Furthermore, in CHO-K1 cells, eNOS and PKCα are localized at sphingolipid- and cholesterol-rich domains in the plasma membrane called caveolae.

Here, we present evidence for the positive allosteric modulation of the P2X7 receptor through glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in CHO (cell line derived from the ovary of the Chinese hamster) cells. The marked potentiation of P2X7 activity through GAGs in the presence of non-saturating agonists concentrations was evident with the endogenous expression of the receptor in CHO cells. The presence of GAGs on the surface of CHO cells greatly increased the sensitivity to adenosine 5'-triphosphate and changed the main P2X7 receptor kinetic parameters EC50, Hill coefficient and E max.

CvL, a lectin from the marine sponge Cliona varians was purified by acetone fractionation followed by Sepharose CL 4B affinity chromatography. CvL agglutinated papainized treated human erythrocytes with preference for type A erythrocytes. The lectin was strongly inhibited by monosaccharide d-galactose and disaccharide sucrose.

Proteinaceous inhibitors with high inhibitory activities against human neutrophil elastase (HNE) were found in seeds of the Tamarind tree (Tamarindus indica). A serine proteinase inhibitor denoted PG50 was purified using ammonium sulphate and acetone precipitation followed by Sephacryl S-300 and Sephadex G-50 gel filtration chromatographies. Inhibitor PG50 showed a Mr of 14.
